Hi, Does anyone know the actual date of the Melody Maker ad that Andy replied to back in good old 1980? I have read on one of the Duran timelines that it was 26th April, but I have that copy and the ad doesn't appear to be there.

Thanks rogerlejohn,
Andy says in the Biography he boarded a train for Birmingham, Blondie were No1 with call me. Blondie were No1 on 26th April for 1 week, so the ad can't have been in the 26th April edition. It wasn't in 19th April as there was a strike and it wasn't printed that week and it isn't in the 12th April edition as I have that one. So that only leaves the 5th April if indeed it was April as the Duran Duran.com timeline says it was. Just thought someone must have tracked down a copy over the years and be able to save me a bit of time (and money) Anyway, my guess is the 5th April, can anyone tell me otherwise? Thanks in advance, Grant.

i've also had a hard time trying to nail that down. i wondered if it was the issue of the week of may 2nd. i've not seen that issue, so it's hard to say for sure...but if you've checked the earlier ones that means the first one of may is very likely. i sure do want to see that advert!!
good luck and please keep us posted! derek...

Maybe it was never in Melody Maker but some other magazine and DD just remembered it wrong?

I've also got a copy of the April 26, 1980 Melody Maker and, although it's a very interesting read and I don't regret buying it, I have not seen the ad for a live-wire guitarist. I'd love to the see this ad.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in the US magazines are usually mailed a few days before the date on the cover. Until I moved to Idaho I always got magazines before the date on the cover -- now I get them later because I live in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps Andy was thinking chronologically, and not according to the date on the cover, or maybe he bought it somewhere that would have had a delivery delay -- which would make it worth a shot to check the May 2 Melody Maker. If anyone can find it, I'm willing to buy it -- depending on cost, of course. rOB

John already released it on his "early days"-pages on TTP. Might be right there on dd.com too if he just copied those pages to there. Don't know about the exact date though

Anyone actually checked with Melody Maker -- if the mag is still around?

Don't know about the exact date though That's an awfully cool ad -- certainly cooler than whatever appeared in MM -- but it must not be the same ad. It's not the same style. MM of that time were very typewriter-like and the ad you posted looks like a poster that may have been posted around town or something. Maybe a question to ask Katy? For some reason it would be cool to have the actual ad -- or the actual ad you posted. I love those super-early stuff in JT's collection, and in Durandy's collection. Wish I could find some. rOB
