no-- it was not sold out-- lots of empty seats even in the front ("upgraded" form 12th row to 7th w/o any problem) the show was fan-f#*king-tastic!!! it is one of the best put together shows they've done in a while-- lots of energy and the venue was perfect! if they come back around to toronto or ohio it would be worth the trip to catch it!! sorry you had to miss!! :-(

I have to agree with blusilva that the show was fan-f#*cing-tastic! It was a great show and from what I noticed, flawless. They played six songs from the new album and quite a few classics. The electroset was brilliant!!
Simon was in a happy, chatty mood and really interacted with the crowd. He pulled a girl up on stage during his introduction and gave another girl his microphone at another point in the show. Like the Concord show, a girl ran on stage to see Simon, but she was quickly whisked off.
My daughter and I were in the fifth row center and had a great view - waving hands and all. Security made sure it was clear so she could see and kept checking with her on a periodic basis to see if she was OK. During Girls on Film they asked her if she would like to go up front so we did. It was soooooo cool!!!
Atlanta...get ready for a fabulous show!!!!!!

I agree with all of the above -- the show was awesome!!! My only gripes were with the city of Detroit and the inefficient staff of the Masonic -- which had nothing to do with the show. Had I known that security would be practically non-existent, then I would have brought my camera. My friends and I got there super early -- about 5:45pm. We weren't sure where to park, even asked several attendants and security guys who were IN the lot where the proper entrance was and they had no clue. The venue was in a rather dilapidated and condemned part of town. We entered in the back of the theatre. Several security guards were there and didn't bat an eye at us. We walked around a long, twisting hallway which ran the side of the theatre. We heard some sort of sound check, but not sure which band. There were no signs telling us where to go and virtually no other people. We found another security guy and all he grunted was "You can't come thru here." Well, where do we go, jack@$$? He could not answer. I felt like I was in a giant maze. We found some sort of lobby (which I later saw was the lobby for the other venue, Scottish Rite) where the VIP table was set up. I was not impressed by the VIP bag, I would hope for $300 that there was something worth it in the flimsy drawstring. We found some nice ushers there who explained to us that none of the employees there tonight had ever worked at the Masonic before, they were all from the Fox! Well, how bloody stupid was that? I asked when the doors open and the ushers were told that they were to be radioed. Mike Illitch certainly runs an ineffective ship!!! You'd think by now they'd have worked out the kinks!!! When we did get inside, the floor ushers had trouble reading our tickets to show us to our seats. Most of the people "in charge" were running around looking at each other bewildered. I also had much difficulty finding a ladies room before the show. Being a boy's club, I passed several men's rooms before finding one for women. The one I found was the creepiest, spookiest bathroom I'd ever been in my life. I almost walked out but mother nature was strong. The opening act, Your Vegas, was the best opening act I have ever seen for Duran. I went to their signing after the show, thinking I'd have enough time to get back to my seat afterwards b/c of Duran time. Imagine my surprise when Duran came on the stage rather early! I barely had time to get back in my seat before they took the stage at about 8:45pm. I was expecting at least nine. The venue was one of the most gorgeous ones I'd ever been to and the seating area was laid out excellently for all. After the show, we got so totally lost trying to find our way back to the highway b/c of the construction. Our directions from AAA were for sh!t, even thought they were aware of the lane closures. We spent an hour in a not-so delightful part of town and I thought we were goners. Until we finally found a highway (I-94), just not the one we wanted. Signage was practically non-existent and I feel certain if it had been daylight I would have found I-75 off Woodward but we just didn't see any signs.

I thought I would be done in when security asked to check my purse at the door. I had my camera, water, a juice box, food and candy in there. I just acted like nothing was wrong, unzipped my purse and the guy barely looked in there and told us to go in.
The camera police did tell me not to take flash photography so needless to say I have a lot of videos and not very many photos.
Yes, the Masonic is in a bad part of town. The city did seem to tear down a lot of dilapidated buildings so there were a lot of vacant lots and it did look a little better than I remember. Parking seemed OK to me and the attendants made sure to tell us to enter in the front door with the red canopy. I felt safe as the lot was really well lit and the attendants were still there to make sure nothing happened to us.
After the show, I saw a bunch of people standing at the back door of the temple in a dark alley waiting for the band. Not such a good idea at night in Detroit or any city for that matter.

I agree with everyone else about the show. It was GREAT!!! They played for 2 hours nonstop. I was exhaused from all the dancing and singing I did throughout the show. We had 4th row on John's side. It is really great to be upfront as you can see their facial expressions and hear their jokes. John said he really likes coming back to Detroit because it was one of the first places to "really get this band".
As for the location--the Masonic was a really great place to see them play. The location is really ghetto. Since we (me, hubby and sister) are very familiar with Detroit and knew of all the roadwork, we had no problem getting to the venue or parking. We arrived around 7pm and there were people in the streets along with signs telling you where to park. I did not experience any confusion inside either, however, I was there before, I was one of the people in the alley after the show waiting for the band. We only waited a short while and then decided we were pathetic and left. It was a little scary then as bums were asking us for money and the Masonic itself is next to boarded up condemed buildings. My husband commented that the buildings should be knocked down and the area would look nicer. You could see the newly built MOtor CIty Casino from the venue. It is gorgeous. I wonder if that's where the band stayed. It's brand new and has some really plush accomodations.
It was a totally great experience for me. The only disappointment was that my sister got the last large zip up hoodie which means that I did not get one. They don't have any in their store either as I checked this morning. I might have to settle for a medium but I much prefer the fit of a large. Oh well...

Glad everyone had fun! This is the first DD Detroit concert I missed in a long time! I did not like the venue! I wish they had played the Fox-better place--I had hoped if they had a current single on the radio or on satellite they would have sold out the Fox--no problem!
Was the balcony sold out?

I had the exact opposite experience with security. Not only did they not let us take our cameras in (luckily we parked right across the street so it didnt take long to run em back) but they even made me put away my cell phone! WTH? And that was after Simon told us to get em out during SAP.
But the concert was amazing, Simon was at the top of his game, and I very much enjoyed meeting some of the others from this board - afan, artful dodger, bloodshift, and a few others whose screen names I forget. Ooops.

This was by far the best DD show I have ever seen. I was in the first row after the pit (so really third) right in between Dom and Nick. We were the crazy chick with the feather boas, which mine was the pink one thrown onstage.LOL Needless to say we had fun. Also the little girl who intro'd Simon was part of our group....she was so precious afterward and cried she was so happy. I will post some pics tomorrow but I am beat right now, as we just got in from Detroit.
