My name is Cheryl and I have been a Duran Duran fan since Aug. 1983! I attended four Duran Duran concerts during their 2008 World Tour. DD are touring in support of their latest CD, Red Carpet Massacre which was released in Nov. 2007. Here were the dates/cities/venues: Sat. May 3 Santa Barbara, CA Santa Barbara Bowl, Sun May 4 (my birthday!) Los Angeles, CA Nokia Theatre LA Live, Th. May 8 Valley Center, CA (San Diego County; I'm from San Diego) Valley View Casino Concerts, and Sat. May 10 Las Vegas, NV The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel (DD's 2ND Las Vegas concert. The 1ST L.V. concert was Fri. May 9; I didn't attend that date).
Here's where I sat for my concerts: Santa Barbara: 13TH Row close to Simon spot, Los Angeles: 40TH Row (Row CC) John's side (John's my fave member!), Valley Center: 18TH Row Simon center, Las Vegas May 10 (2ND Row John's side! DD's The Joint concerts were GENERAL ADMISSION STANDING FLOOR).
I couldn't believe DD played a concert on my birthday (May 4)! Also, the concert happend in the SAME STATE (CA) where I live and the city (Los Angeles) was close to where I live (San Diego)!! I knew I was going to celebrate my B-Day with my family after my B-Day. I did not attend the Fri. May 9 Las Vegas concert because I used that day to celebrate my B-Day with my family.
Here's the setlist to the four concerts I attended. I'm a little surprised the setlist is the same! Usually, DD slightly changes the setlist for every concert during a tour. My fave concert songs are printed in BOLD TYPE.
1. The Valley
2. Red Carpet Massacre ( At the Valley Center(San Diego) concert, the staff handed out multi-colored GLOWSTICKS. This was the only concert I had a glowstick. So, for RCM, I had my glowstick on RED).
3. NITE RUNNER
4. Hungry Like The Wolf
5. PLANET EARTH (Night Version. I said my "Switch it off!" part. San Diego- glowstick on BLUE)
6. FALLING DOWN (1ST single off RCM, Simon explained how DD and Justin Timberlake wrote the song. In L.A., Simon explained that the FD video was shot in L.A. at a hospital called Linda Vista. It's closed down now and it's supposed to be haunted.
7. COME UNDONE
8. SKINDIVERS (When Simon introduced the song, I yelled "South Dakota!" a few times and waved a small South Dakota flag. In San Diego, my glowstick was on GREEN (horny (sex) song-- oh-- I'm so bad! LOL).
9. THE REFLEX ( I yelled the "The Reflex" intro part before Simon wanted audience participation! ;D This is the song where in the middle of the song Nick says something. Here's what I could make out. Santa Barbara: TOO COLD in CA! (No, it wasn't Nick! LOL), L.A. : something about home, San Diego: TOO MUCH LAUGHING between Nick and Simon, and L.V. May 10: could make it out).
10. SAVE A PRAYER ( My fave DD song! San Diego-- glowstick on LIGHT PINK-- close to a WHITE color glowstick for me. Simon plays acoustic guitar for this song. In L.A., Simon dedicated the song to a male fan club member. John told the audience to get their cell phones out to light up the room. He said cell phones were the new cigarette lighter for the new millennium).
11. A VIEW TO A KILL ( Only James Bond movie theme song to reach #1 on the single's chart (1985). Simon wanted audience to sing "Dance into the fire" part of the song. San Diego-- glowstick on RED for fire).
ELECTROSET ( Since I didn't attend the New York City DD Broadway concerts in Nov. 2007, I only read about the electroset. So, I was VERY HAPPY to see that I would experience hearing the set. It's DD older songs set to a techo (rave) beat. The four members play in front of the stage. So, people get to see Roger (drummer) more clearly). Electroset songs 12-17
12. LAST CHANCE ON THE STAIRWAY
13. ALL SHE WANTS IS
14. WARM LEATHERETTE (cover song from Grace Jones)
15. I DON'T WANT YOUR LOVE
16. SKIN TRADE (It wasn't the whole song)
17. TEMPTED (from the RCM CD) End of electroset
18. NOTORIOUS (I did my fists puching the air at the end of the song part just like Simon ;D )
19. GIRLS ON FILM (In the middle of the song is when Simon introduced the band. First, back up singer Anna Ross. Simon said, "Hey, fellas, what to meet a lady." In Santa Barbara, a man behind me said, "Sexual chocolate!" Next was sax player Simon Willescroft (Simon W.). Simon said, "Hey, ladies, want to meet a man with a SHINY HORN!" Then, Dom Brown (electric guitar). Simon introduced Dom by saying "electric guitar". I thought that was too close for comfort because that's how Simon introduced Andy Taylor for the 2005 tour. Next, was Roger Taylor (drums). Simon does a rap about Roger: We Got The Beat. It explain about Roger's drumming. Next, Nick Rhodes (keyboards), Simon called Nick the alien with a pretty face. Then, John Taylor (bass guitar),in Santa Barbara, I started chanting, "Play that f___ing
bass, John!" And, Simon, did chant that and wanted the audience to chant with him. Last, was Simon Le Bon (lead singer). This time around, he didn't pick a lady to introduce him. He asked the audience to answer this question: "What's my name?" I said,"Simon Le Bon!" in the way Snoop Dogg said his name for his rap song "What's My Name?" After the audience said Simon's name for about four times, Simon said his name and that he was the lead singer for the band Duran Duran and he enjoyed making people happy).
20. ORDINARY WORLD (San Diego-- glowstick--LIGHT PINK (WHITE) )
21. SUNRISE (song off their last CD, Astronaut, the music between us beginning)
22. WILD BOYZ (I chanted my WILD BOYZ 3x part early. )
After WB, DD waved to the audience and left the stage. Of course, audience cheered, yelled, and made noise to have DD return to the stage. DD return to the stage after two minutes to play the final song.
23. RIO (last song. After Rio, DD waved to the audience for the last time. John said," Thanks for coming!" Then, John left stage. No one is on the stage and that marked the end of the concert).
DD played for two hours!! Here was DD's stage time frames: Santa Barbara: 7:50PM--9:51PM, L.A. 9:19PM--11:20PM, San Diego 8:28PM--10:32PM, and L.V. May 10 9:10PM--11:12PM. DD had an opening act called Your Vegas. They are a five male member band from Leeds, England. The lead singer sounded a little like Bono (U2). The lead singer broke his foot and he made jokes about it.
What I did before and after each concert. I drove to Santa Barbara and spent time downtown and eat before the concert. After the S.B. concert, I stayed at the venue for a short time before I drove back to San Diego. Before the L.A. concert, my sister, Carol, sung "Happy Birthday" to me and I ate a white cupcake. I wanted to acknowledge it was my B-Day. I ate lunch and drove to my hotel in L.A. Since the L.A. concert happend on my B-Day, I decided to spend the night at a hotel. I ate dinner before the concert. After the L.A. concert, I spent time at the venue and then back to my hotel. Before the San Diego concert, I had dinner (Valley View Casino's Buffet) with a few San Diego Yahoo Duranies Group members (So fun! ;D After the San Diego concert, I stayed at the venue for a short time and then drove back home. For the L.V. May 10 concert, I drove to L.V. the day of the concert (left S.D. at 6:10AM and arrived at L.V. at 10:50AM). I ate at Planet Hollywood restaurant. Then, I went to Juicy Couture shop and bought a pink Go Juicy T-shirt and two pairs of socks (pink and gray). Then, by chance, I saw the Playboy Store. So, I bought the DD Rock The Rabbit T-shirt. Then, I took photos of the DD concert sign and venue (I did that with the other venues, too). Then, checked into my hotel and had room service for dinner. First time I did room service! ;D Then, I got ready for the concert. After the L.V. concert, I had a drink with friends at the Circle Bar which is inside the Hard Rock Hotel.
I was in my hotel room by 12:45AM. The next day, May 11, I had breakfast in my hotel. I left L.V. at 9:00AM and arrived in San Diego around 1:45PM. And that marked the end of me seeing four DD concerts for their 2008 World Tour.
Here's the DD merchandise I bought: In S.B. : DD program, RCM Album T-shirt with tour dates on the back, RCM red heart pin, and RCM Ladies hoodie jacket, in L.A. : Red Band Shot T-shirt with tour dates on the back and RCM black heart pin, in S.D. : blue DD Planet Earth T-shirt, and in L.V. May 10: DD RCM Men's Football (Soccer) jersey. I already had the commemorative posters set and RCM button badge set when I bought those items and others in Dec. 2007 when DD played in San Diego for Jingle Ball.
My fave DD concert from out of the four I attended. All four concerts were GREAT! This was a TOUGH CHOICE for me to decide. Here's the list from greatest on down:
1. Las Vegas Sat. May 10
2. Santa Barbara
3. Los Angeles
4. San Diego
Reflections about my concerts. I'm glad I was able to ATTEND ALL FOUR CONCERTS. I didn't have anything to stop me from attending a concert(s). I'm glad the weather was nice (not too cold or too hot or rainy) for my four concerts. For two out of the four concerts I attended they were held at an OUTDOOR venue: Santa Barbara--Santa Barbara Bowl and San Diego--Valley View Casino Concerts. I WAS HOPING IT WOULD NOT RAIN ON THOSE TWO CONCERTS! IT DIDN'T! I'm glad none of my concert(s) were CANCELLED! Only two venues had venue screens to see DD on stage: L.A. and L.V. The other two venues, S.B. and S.D., didn't have venue screens. Of course, I yelled the names of the DD members thoughout the concerts. Also, I yelled for Anna, Dom, and Simon W.) I wore Happy Birthday stickers that announced to people it was my B-Day and my B-Day week. People wished me a Happy B-Day! THX! Also, I saw all THREE SOUTHERN CA DD CONCERTS: Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and San Diego! It was FUN meeting other Duranies during my DD concerts travels!!! ;D ;D
I hope you enjoyed reading my DD concert reviews (which is now a thesis paper LOL ). If you get a chance, if you haven't already, attend a few DD concerts during a tour. IT'S WORTH THE EXPERIENCE!
