They let him go (fired him more or less) so they could have Andy back in the band for the reunion, at least that's what I understand.
I guess there were also some severe tensions between Simon and Warren, and Simon was ready to just throw in the towel and retire the band rather than continue.

Firstly, Warren didn't leave.
Succinctly put, Simon was no longer enjoying being in the band as it was, and, while visiting John's home with Nick, after basically saying he was "done" once the tour was over, John planted the seed of the idea of the original band reuniting...
They had apparently once tried to get the band back together in 1991/2, but the idea at that time was to have both Warren and Andy on guitar - one of the guitarists would not entertain the idea of sharing the stage with the other (any guesses?), so they already knew this time that it would have to be Andy only, so Simon wrote a long letter to Warren, in essence telling him, "it's no longer working out; it's either end the band or reunite it, so Andy's back in and you're out"... IMO, while I can understand just how depressed Simon had become, the way Warren was dismissed was handled completely wrongly... He did get a share of the royalties from Astronaut as part of his severance pay, but who knows how much or how little that ended up being?...

Simon didnt write much or anything on the Pop Trash album, which is interesting considering when he first got into Duran Duran he had a whole notebook of future hit songs. Many years in the business might hurt his writing. ~ "Wolf"

I remember reading somewhere that Simon was no longer involved in writing the songs. It was just Warren and Nick Rhodes who did it all, the music, the lyrics. Simon did not like that at all. It did not feel like a band to Simon, who usually writes the lyrics and decides how they are sung. Warren had also dabbled in porn (in a gay magazine, but not with men) and had his rock rod (sculpture of his penis) for sale, and I think that probably maybe soured things somewhat--though I am not sure if all that happened before he was dismissed. At any rate, I don't think it was a MAJOR contributing factor. I don't think they handled firing Warren bad at all. I think giving him Astronaut royalties was more than enough, especially for someone who was not an original member. That is the nature of the beast. Bands sometimes break up or change lineups, and he was not treated disrespectfully at all, as far as I know. The only "porn" that I recall Warren doing while he was in the band was the gay mag spread. The rock rod and the film clips were all done after his dismissal.

...and yet some question why having both Andy AND Warren playing together on stage wouldn't have worked. If Nick and Warren handling the writing side of things didn't feel right for Simon....how could we expect the other 2 to feel comfortable sharing what both had each done solo in the past? If fans couldn't see it happening, then why be so affronted by one of those actually involved being blunt enough to say it wouldn't work? At least he was honest about it.
