re-visited JT's solo stuff recently and was pleasantly surprised how good it still is...

Indeed ;D i don't like all of it, but he's got a lot of really great songs. Especially in the Japan album.

I've never been able to get into it, and I've tried. I don't think he's a good lyricist.
I do like Andy's and Warren's solo albums though.
Though I wasnt impressed with Andy's Spanish Sessions, and I can't get into Warren's latest Playing In Tounges - except for Sid Arthur's Message which is a classic song.

I bought all of his solo stuff, but I have to admit that I never listened to it. I think I may have heard the song "Feelings are Good" but it wasn't enough to get me to listen to the rest of his stuff. Am I missing out on a revelation?
And I liked a couple of songs from the Devils (Nick and Stephen Duffy).

I couldn't get into any of the Devil's stuff or Andy's solo work. But I do have Warren's "Thanks to Frank" and a few of John's solo albums. I find John's song writing skills to be pretty good actually, and there are a few hidden gems among his work ("Immortal" is a particularly good one). But John just doesn't seem to have that lead singer- type of voice for it. You can hear him having a hard time staying on key quite often. But I love that many of his songs seem very heartfelt and personal. Just avoide "rap" like "Meltdown", that one's pretty bad.

madoldlu, you should check it out. Immortal like Droid says is great, and then you have stuff like The Panhandler, Fields of Eden, A-Anon, Air Miles, Losing You, Lonely Child, 6000 Miles and Gabe which anyone who appreciates music will like, I'm sure. Yes, he's not the greatest singer of all times, but then neither is Lou Reed. He's got what it takes to write a good song, and his lyrics are personal, there's nothing esoteric and lebonish about them. He's got an amazing song that unfortunately never made it to the recorded stage, there's only a live cut of it, the kind of stuff that makes your hair stand on end. I'll try to find it.

The Japan Album is really good. At the time I got it, Pop Trash was just released. And actually... I prefer the Japan Album above Pop Trash!
"Feelings are good"-album is pretty weak IMO.

Wow. I guess I shouldn't be surprised John is getting all this praise. Now I'll definitely have to listen to them. Any particular CD I should start with?
Edit: I guess the Japan album?

Yep, those are all good ones. Not to mention "Hey Day", "Run Together", and his covers of "She's Not There" and "Just Another High". His contribution in Neurotic Outsiders isn't bad either.
