I'm guessing it's a handwritten etching in the matrix part of the vinyl (I think that's what it's called...the bit after the last songs ends). There are often little in-jokes put there. I think I have one (can't remember which 12" single) that says "when in doubt, flange it," which I'm betting was an in-joke about the constant flange on most of NR's keyboard parts on the first 2 albums. I'll have to check my US and Canadian copies of Carnival to see if I've got the "Orgasmatron Edition." ;D

Good point! I didn't even think about it being that, but I'm betting you're correct.

I just checked my US copy. It's etched in the inner part of side 1.

HA! Mine too! It says "Orgasmatron" on Side 1, and "Serendipity" on Side 2. How funny. Just think, nearly 30 years after its release and we're discussing something someone etched into the negative.

Even though vinyl is being produced today (mainly in the UK, but to a somewhat lesser extent in the U.S.), it's the little things like that which made vinyl all the more interesting. I'm not sure if that was done much in the '70s, but it seems like it was done quite a bit with the up and coming groups in the '80s. Some 7" and 12" might have the etching "A Porky Prime Cut". Of course, we all know about the etchings for the DD 12"s (the UK ones).

Found a Depeche Mode blue-color vinyl bootleg album today from my local magnificently awesome-o record store. Etched in the vinyl on one side it says "Thank God for Analog" and on the other it sayd "Keep Your Day Job". ;D

Yep, one of my US copies has both words as well. The other copy does not, and neither does my Canadian issue. Now I'm gonna have to dig through the 12"s to try to find the one with "when in doubt, flange it!" ;D
