Even though I was not born in the 1980’s, yes I’m a child of the 90’s, I can still appreciate the music that was made in the era. Many bands faltered during this time, which was plagued by parachute pants and goofy mullets, but some groups were just hitting their prime. Michael Jackson unveiled his most massive hit Thriller, while Rush was one of those groups who really brought out their A Game when Ronald Reaganwas president. Among the other bands killing in the 80’s were Pink Floyd who released The Wall in 1980 and Duran Duran who topped the charts with singles “Hungry Like The Wolf” and “Rio.” The England born Duran Duran released their first record in 1981 to critical acclaim, and then changed the new wave genre forever with their groundbreaking record Rio.
After fifteen years of almost non-existence, the group has finally had a great come back. This return to popularity ended earlier this summer though when singer Simon Le Bon was dealing with vocal problems. Le Bon is back on track now after almost 3 months of absence and is planning an extensive tour across the states with his group this fall. Voyaging in support of their latest record All You Need Is Now, the synth pop outfit will kick off the festivities on September 23rd in Everett, WA and then end in October. The fantastic group Neon Trees, who were obviously influenced from this 80’s group, will serve as the tour’s opening act. Here is the full list of dates:

This tour should bring Duran back into the spotlight. The fact that they are still touring after almost 35 years, and are bringing a hipper group along for the ride, speaks volumes. Neon Trees are a perfect accompaniment for this elder group, but it’ll still be interesting to see them tour together. I am very excited to see how the two generations of new wave fans will react to each other. These shows will likely have the forty something’s interacting with the twenty year old hipsters getting drunk on PBR. This is something I have to see for myself when they come to Florida. For those who might not know, here is a song from Neon Trees.
