Weird Al scores his first #1 album on Billboard 200 after 30 years in the business? www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/weird-al-yankovic-tops-billboard-720633Duran's marketing people if you exist..he releases like 8 songs a day from the album with videos from movie stars to fans ie Tacky and other songs.....Duran really needs to think outside the box... I always say I don't care about album sales and a lot has to do with when an artist releases an album...and it seems like Weird Al and Adam Sandberg can do it with parody albums but why can't Duran??? Still crossing my fingers that it will happen one day!! Maybe with #14 like Weird Al's #14.....

I might be old school but that first single needs to be a good one to grab attention. And Sunrise and Falling Down were sort of Milquetoast, and All You Need is Now was just a really bad choice. Made me long for Someone Else Not Me.

Because Weird Al knows a lot more about what he's doing than DD does, at least as far as reaching modern audiences goes. Releasing videos all week long was a fantastic idea.

Don't get me wrong, I think he is a genius at what he does. But he takes a song that already was a smash hit and then writes different lyrics to it. Duran actually has to compose, invent the songs.

Dr. you are soo right..
But from a Marketing point of view they need a stong single and need to think outside the box! I want Duran Duran to play SNL--half of the acts they had were not memorable..they need to just be everywhere and have a single like Ordinary World...that song was everywhere when it came out!!

Is 40K worth all this bad publicity?
Seriously--they probably spend that one day in the studio?
I am going on some comments and they aren't kind to Duran....when was their last hit? Are they still around etc...and I put like ALL YOU NEED is Now!!!

Al does original songs, too. And while it's true that parodies don't require composing the music he still has to come up with good lyrics. If he sucked at it and people didn't like it, he wouldn't still be around after thirty years.
And promotion's a big part of it. Al (or his management) knows how to use social media to get attention and sales.

DD don't have a clue when it comes to promotion and marketing. The Digital/CD split release of 'All You Need Is Now' was a big mistake.
Here in the UK the album entered the UK Album Charts at #11 in March 2011. It would have gone Top 10 if they hadn't released most of the album digitally in December 2010. A lot of people didn't buy the CD version of the album when it came out, they just downloaded the additional tracks on the CD version, and added them to the already purchased digital version. This cost the band a number of album sales.

I wouldn't expect much from DD in terms of album sales. They haven't picked a good lead single since TWA--over 20 years ago. Girl Panic was the obvious lead single choice from AYNIN and they blew it...again. AYNIN is a great album as a whole, but the title track seems a bit preachy and I feel it was the wrong title for the album.
Another opportunity that I'm concerned they'll screw up is Fashion Rocks in September...they have the chance to debut new music in a public forum where people will actually be paying attention. But instead they'll play old stuff and be quickly forgotten as a nostalgia act. They made the same mistake when they played Wembley twice in as many weeks for two very high profile events a few years back. When you are on a high profile stage, introduce new music...if it doesn't suck...
All this said, I'm sure the album will have some great music for those of us who hear it and I couldn't be more excited!

But from a Marketing point of view they need a stong single and need to think outside the box! I want Duran Duran to play SNL--half of the acts they had were not memorable..they need to just be everywhere and have a single like Ordinary World...that song was everywhere when it came out!! At this point, I think the only way the band will ever have a strong selling album or massive publicity over new music is if they release a song that truly transcends the marketplace and translates to people outside of the fan base. OW was one case of that, and as we know, it's hard for lightning to strike twice in that respect. In terms of SNL, it's probably a two-way street there too. They booked on plenty of other shows, but with only 20-some episodes of SNL produced each year, it probably requires some interest on the end of the people booking these guys too. I don't know about that. From a fan's standpoint, we got to hear nine songs before hearing any proper physical release. In addition to that, the band had press release material for saying that the album hit the Top 10/#1 on itunes during it's initial release date. By all accounts, it seems like it worked out okay for them. In addition, a lot of the people who did buy the itunes release also ended up buying the physical one, so that was just additional sales/$ on top of what they would have seen anyway. In terms of people downloading and not buying, it's sort of similar to arguments I've seen on here and elsewhere with special editions and such. There's fans that will say "the numbers are inflated" due to fans buying more than one copy. The thing is that it happens with every single band though (and if anything, it would be the bigger acts who have 'inflated' numbers as a result). There's going to be people who buy every single edition of an album available and I'm sure there are plenty who just download the album and never buy a physical release. It happens. I wouldn't expect much from DD in terms of album sales. They haven't picked a good lead single since TWA--over 20 years ago. Girl Panic was the obvious lead single choice from AYNIN and they blew it...again. All this said, I'm sure the album will have some great music for those of us who hear it and I couldn't be more excited! I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of the 'first single' choices either, but with hindsight, I get the perspective on why they chose them (or the label, management, whoever). With the more upbeat numbers and pop songs, who was going to end up playing them? John said that they did give Girl Panic to the BBC radio or whoever it was in the UK, but they never ended up playing it. As much as songs like Falling Down or AYNIN seem like safe choices, they did actually get played on some of the Adult-orientated radio stations in the US, and that probably got a bit more attention than something like Nite Runner would have gotten if it just sat on a shelf at a Top 40 station. With satellite radio/Pandora/streaming taking a more mainstream route these days though, it will be interesting to see how their first single choice turns out on this one though.
