Where is the Extended “A View to a Kill” ReMix? September 15th, 2014
Hi Katy – this is for whomever in the band wishes to answer…It’s 1985! 12″s are in full gear: remixes, dub mixes, extended mixes, etc., and Duran have been releasing some truly superb versions of their songs since the very first release, “Planet Earth”…Why then no 12″ remix, extended version or anything of “A View to a Kill”? Have always wondered about this…Cheers, Mario
“Mario, Ah.. you have to blame me for that. I wanted to keep a certain purity to the 3 minutes plus of ‘AVTAK’.. some of the recent remixes had been rubbing me the wrong way. I was adamant about it- that there should be no ‘extended versions’ or remixes. It was short sighted of me, I have since regretted it. JT”

Or it could have to do with the movie owning the rights (partially?). I can't believe one member of the band would have that much power over the lead song of an major international motion picture. It would be the kind of thing that the studio would just take from the band and do what they want with it.
BTW, I can agree with what JT said that he wanted to keep the "purity" of the 3 minute version. But I still think the ultimate decision would have been out of his hands.
And there's the *slight* remix from the end of the movie when the lines "dance into the fire when all we see is the view to a kill" is repeated twice in the end of the song instead of played just once like in the official single.

Thats what he said 29 years ago, so i would side with him. There are rumours of a Thompson and Barbiero 12" done at the time though.

That is not a remix, just a crappy movie edit I would say. BTW: I have previosuly read somewhere that there was no time to commision a 12" remix for AVTAK, as the band were already running towards the deadline of the movie release (or that a 12" remix was commissioned even but not received in time for a 12" release). The state of the band at the time will surely have played a role. AT and RT were definately not that interested in any of DD's goings on at the time, and Arcadia was still in full swing. Leaving JT with a strong say in this (him also being the one who got them into the Bond deal in the first place). It surely has nothing to do with MGM partially owning the rights, as a-ha had a proper (and quite nice) 12" version of their title song for The Living Daylights two years later. It's a pity DD does not have a say in their EMI backcatalogue anymore, as a new but 80s style classic 12" remix of AVTAK would make a nice "B"-side or bonus track for a current 'single' (it would definately please many fans; even Nile Rodgers could do this as he repeatedly said that it was a shame he could not produce AVTAK as he was busy with other projects). Would make a great combi with Bernard Edwards production. JT's remark in Ask Katy that he did not like the preceding 12" versions is a bit strange, as both The Reflex and Wild Boys's remixes are among the best 12" versions of the 1980s. I fully agree if he hints at the 12" versions of Union of the Snake or New Moon On Monday though; these are among my least favourite of the band.

That is not a remix, just a crappy movie edit I would say. It's just an edit for the clip. There's nothing crappy about it. And a few lines of accordeon were also added which makes it more than a simple edit.

I bet one day it will surface, a friend suggested this could be a great opportunity for the next Record Store Day. I agree! On silver coloured vinyl in a die cut gatefold sleeve please! ;-)

He mentioned it in his bio-pdf : Duran Duran / View To A Kill / Capitol / Additional Production, Mixing www.staminarecords.com/steve-thompson-discography.pdfAll labels and sleeves mention that Jason Corsaro mixed the track so there must be another mix somewhere. Strange that John doesn't mention it.
