Sometimes spending the extra time in production is good, and it did help some tracks sound much better than their demo form. When I say 'production' I'm talking Alex Sadkin, Colin Thurston, Nile Rogers etc, as well as the members of the band (not just Nick). I still rate 7ATRT as my favourite all-round album of all time, even though it sounds more dated than DD1 or Rio. This was not the case with Liberty, as all the fun of the demos seemed to be lost as the music was developed, and went from Rope and My Family to Venice Drowning and Downtown. TWA sounds better for the production, and of course Notorious album sounds like the Notorious album thanks to the slick feel of style and production. I think the only stuff ruined completely by over production was <ahem, gulp!> RCM, and the only album which didnt have ENOUGH production was Poop Trash. Thats what I think anyway.

A lot of that is what I was trying to get at as well. Writing a song and taking the time to make it sound right is one thing. Producing a track and not knowing when to say too much is too much, or that one idea is better than the other, is another thing.

I remember reading that "Sekret Oktober" was done in a day or 2, during their uber-hectic 7&RT days. THAT is one of their very best songs ever ! Simple and pared-down, it obviously lacks the overproduction that seemed to threaten to overtake the actual album (though I LOVE this album so much, always will).
