Very interesting read. And I quite agree. Without Nick, there is no Duran Duran. Like him or loathe him, he is vital and it would definitely not be the same without him. He lends a lot more to the sound than given credit for. And not bad at lyrics either if Girl Panic is anything to go by. There are times when it's grating on the ears. AYNIN for example. And then brilliance in other tracks where the song just never would have worked without the Nick magic! Could we imagine Rio without that spectacular opening? Probably not!

just out of curiosity.. has anyone here ever seen Depeche Mode live? Yes me, just recently! Dave Gahan is a brilliant frontman! And I am sorry for that, but I had a laugh watching Andrew Fletcher (and yes, I guess it is him, you are insinuating on, right?)...

indeed I did. At least DD don´t need an extra keyboarder on stage to play "Fletch´s parts".

Don't know Depeche Mode live but maybe they need an extra player because more of the synths layers and melody lines are actually played live.

They need an additional keyboard player, because Fletch admits he can´t really play keyboard and instead uses his time on stage to clap to the music.

A real joke Example see here: --- Although, the band is cool anyway and the live concert in Bremen, Germany was brilliant!

Behind Le Bon, the band played beautifully. Duran Duran in a live setting allows the audience to see how well Rhodes plays keyboards and produces the heavy synth sound that is the group's hallmark. Brown was no slouch either, peeling off a few tremendous guitar solos that impressed the crowd. A guest sax player added an element of sophistication to the arrangements on several tracks.

Nick is a perfectionist, and would probably wants to keep that studio sound, but in a live environment, there is so much to do on a synth, compared to just sitting down with just a acoustic piano, there is so many layers of sound to achieve and keeping samples in time. Some bands have at least two or three keyboard players in a live set.
