the daily duran: Katy asks a question that I think is brilliant and worthy of a blog all on its own. “Do you think there’s a difference between being relevant and being current?” John answers the way I would suspect, but suggesting that not everything that is current is good. (100% agreed. I have plenty more I could add here, but I will refrain. I’m already at just under 900 words and there’s more to be written. EEK!) Like I wrote in my own summary, I did not think that this question had to be asked. John didn't suggest but stated outright that some of the current stuff is "crap." Relevancy is to each his own. What's relevant to one may not be too another. It's a simple point. Why bother asking? Again, Katy could've left off her bragging about the "stuff I get because I work for you." That wasn't at all pleasant. I'm not a huge fan of the Daily Duranie...never have. I just don't like her writing style and injecting her personal opinions in the middle of writing makes it all the harder to follow. That is simply my opinion only. But she did have one decent thought...one that I've said here many times. Hearing HOW the guys talk makes more of an impact on what they say. Reading words is one thing that can't convey the same meaning as spoken words. That's why I wish I could put it on here for you guys to listen to. John sounded relaxed to be in LA back with Gela. Not bored...as this blogger suggested. I'd miss my spouse as well if we were in different countries for long periods of time. He sounded very positive about the album and was honest.

Nice to read all of this. Still quite some info actually.
But we do get a lot of warnings and 'told you so' lines, i do not quite like that writing style as it implicates everyone is thinking/expecting the other way around. But that is just my personal opinion, and maybe that is the purpose of a blog.

A few questions
Since they are NOT Playing any new songs and don't want to throw a bone for us die hards:
Why continue to do shows if they play the same songs?--switch it up a bit please--maybe only play songs from the 80's or something they don't play a million times..
And I am really worried this album is going to sound OVER PRODUCED--Hope I am wrong but when Roger says they are spending 10 to 15 hours a day on the couch I think of overproduction!! KISS guys! Kiss !!!

As they did with Reach uo for the Sunrise, having a song included in a movie, or series would be a great way to create awareness of a new album. We, the core audience, know it's coming and know that the band has never stopped recording; but we are a tiny group and greater exposure to a mass audience is needed.

Now I can understand John's comment on AYNIN better. Great record but it didn't have the impact they had longed for. Maybe they want to do something like U2 did with Itunes although that backlashed on U2 too. Anyway, for the young audience it's all about streaming now anyway.
I can understand their line of thinking but it will be very difficult to have an impact like that. Even if they have a killer single à la Ordinary World.
This record screams overproduced due to lack of a real producer. Some songs will be a few years old by the time they release them. Back in the day, the producer took charge of the album : Made sure the essence was there for every song, obliging the band to finish a song. Ronson and Rodgers will be credited as producers but their role is more an occasional collaboration. They hop in for a few days every 4 months or so. That's not producing a record.
I'm afraid the album won't sound as an album but as a collection of songs.
I also wonder what John means with "new music will be filtering through". He could have just said : There will be a single in june. But he didn't say that. So does that mean an EP ? an app ? Very curious

I'm afraid the album won't sound as an album but as a collection of songs. That's fine as long as they are 12 amazing songs. Seriously it doesn't worry me if all the Nile Rodgers songs are funky, all the Mark Ronson songs have an 80s vibe, and all the Mr Hudson songs are hip-hop (actually that does worry me, but I digress) as long as all of them are incredible. I would rather Duran release 12 individual songs of 12 different genres that are fantastic and can be played in any order, than release an interesting concept record where if you get high on weed then turn off the volume to Gone With The Wind (disk 2) from 12:44 the songs amazingly match up to the movie.

*Some of it has a danceable, groovy feeling but not all the songs All I am hearing is Funky and Groovy and Danceable. I absolutely am a huge fan of those ingredients, as long as they dont sell out and make it campy. I'm sure they wont. I have a feeling (and I dont care) this is going to be 'Safe x8, SAP x4' but I like the energy sorrounding this release already. I would rather Duran release 12 individual songs of 12 different genres that are fantastic and can be played in any order, than... So funny, and so true, I agree. I still have a feeling they might mix all the tracks like a mix tape; but record distributors may hate this idea so its unlikely.

Maybe they'll stagger stream a few songs before the album release which is pretty standard practice these days and, as such, unlikely to make a big impact. They gave away the single AYNIN as a free download so maybe they'll do something similar?? Although this didn't do much for the parent album as it tanked commercially, maybe as a result of that whirring first taster?? A film or a commercial (which will do more damage to the cred) tie in could be a possibility but for that they'd probably need a major record company with all it's corporate arms to really make it work. Even then why would a major give a band who haven't had a worldwide hit for 23 years a plum film or commercial slot?? Maybe because Nile and Ronson are on it??
