I agree that it was the most idiotic commercial decision to make and release a covers album after their comeback with TWA.
But I have to say that their choices for songs to cover was ridiculous and reek of them trying to gain some street cred. It's like your dad saying he likes rap too in order to relate to you better. It's as bad as the New Kids on the Block making "Hang Tough" so they also try and look tougher than they were portrayed to be. It's just embarrassing.
As you can guess I didn't like TY at all. I liked White Lines and actually Thank You, but that's pretty much it. I personally don't like the original versions of most of the songs they chose, which is at the heart of why I don't like the album, but I still see that their choices had dubious motives.
Fame is probably one of the best covers ever done by anyone. The way they sped up the song and added their special touches to it really does something rare--they were able to improve on a Bowie song! I also think their Instant Karma is fantastic. But those are songs that are well suited for the band. I'm all for them trying to stretch their creative muscles, but I think they should have balanced their choices of songs a little better by doing songs that sound right coming from them and not do an entire album of "most incompatible with Duran".

I don't think it was THAT bad. I also like U2 and they are always performing cover songs (segments).
Something Duran also do in concert..
