I unfortunately had to sit through the VMAs Sunday night for a family member... it was literally one of the most ridiculous, pointless and embarrassing things I have ever seen... Look, I am all for 'shock' value and 'get it', but this show was just so trashy and embarrassing towards the state of modern popular music it was unbelievable.
But listening to songs by Miley, Niki Minaj, the various rappers, bieber, etc... I totally get 'Paper Gods' from two different points of view;
1. It is a musical statement on the current situation in pop; synthetic, mindless, contrived garbage with very little, if any, real musicianship.
2. It is Duran Duran's attempt to capture that audience by adding so many female pop/culture personalities to the songs and forgoing real bass/drum/guitar 'band' sound for the synthesized noise present in Miley, nikki, Lady Gaga, rap music...
Actually, it's a brilliant 'concept' album and humorous statement; hey we're 50 something English men, but we can sound just like the young, female pop stars too!!
I am a musician, I have been in the studio, and have 2 decades of experience. I can tell you that why there may be studio vids of Duran Duran; these songs are synthetic, under-produced crap from a musician point of view. Any kid could come up with this with a variety of cheap music software.
Some of the songs are 'good', I do dig 'Universe Alone', a few others. But listen to 'Girl Panic!': Do you hear those pounding drums, the solo early on, the bass slap and playing? The guitar? That's a band.
When I listen to most of the PG songs all I hear is synthetic, programmed loops, bleeps, whirrs, and bloops, a drum machine and a guitar so forced in the background it may as well not exist; exactly what I hear in Miley, Nikki, Rap, Gaga... etc...
'Paper Gods', intentional or not, is a statement on current pop music; contrived and synthetic.
I wish they had emulated Muse, lol, at least we would have gotten some decent playing.
