...your point? I've described most of RCM nearly as "insultingly" in the past, as well as a few other songs like Know It All. Hell, ask Coolbarn his opinion on any number of Duran songs he doesn't like. He uses some pretty creative descriptions to capture the depth of his distaste for them. I've never heard that bother you. So, where is the limit? If someone hates 12 Duran songs from across their career, and describes that hatred vividly, it would appear that that's OK. But if all twelve happen to be on the same album, it suddenly becomes a no-no? Seriously, sitting back and watching all this is killing my love of this forum, and NOT because of the people who dislike the new material ( regardless of their reasoning), but instead because of those whose own positive view of that same material is apparently so fragile that it requires constantly lashing out at those who disagree. It's becoming akin to a cult IMO, or at least an elitist clique. " I'm a bigger fan than you because I never question nor dislike anything the band does"..." I'm a bigger DD fan than you because X, Y, Z..." It's all bullshit. All of it. As soon as one plays the "I'm a bigger fan" card (whether stated directly or clearly implied), they've lost the argument. It's the fan forum version of Godwin's Law. With the greatest of respect to you Errbt, I don't want to get embroiled with you about this. If it's 'killing the forum' for you then don't scratch the surface. Don't bring Coolbarn into this either. There's no way he would describe a Duran song (or in this case, an album) 'a stinking turd'. He holds court by a more professional and respected method. If you think that's ok as a description of an album by your favourite band then that's upto you. Would you honestly describe a Duran album 'a stinking turd'? Perhaps I am over sensitive. Perhaps I do take comments like that too seriously. I appreciate that not every person on this board counts Duran as their favourite artist. The band are not the be all and end all, but they are my all time favourite musicians..period. I'm never going to change so I expect there will be further run-ins down the line. I'm glad you raised the point about other insults not bothering me..that's because the critical assessments made have been just that...descriptive, interesting, informative etc. If points raised are throwaway or meaningless then, like others, I choose not to respond. But there's a few I can't ignore and if I'm accused of going against the grain to put the brakes on someone making seriously derogatory remarks about a Duran album...then I'm guilty as charged! As you've stated yourself, I'm not against anybody judging music by Duran, good or bad. But there are words you just don't associate with what's meant to be one of your favourite band and I can't, and never will be able to accept that. This is not about who is the biggest fan of Duran Duran. Everybody here and on every Duran board is a fan in their own right. I have high standards, just like many others here. If I choose to speak out against perpetrators who seem to be bringing the forum into disrepute then I'll holler. That's me..I can't change me. I'm very passionate. The band got me through a serious motorcycle accident in '92 where I nearly lost my life. I put all my energy into the group by writing a fanzine and I went back to college because I was inspired by Duran. Perhaps (there's that word again) that's why I'm more sensitive than others here. I don't honestly know. But I won't change my stance. Errbt..I appreciate you taking the time to ask the question and I hope I've given you some answers. I'm not enjoying reading my own comments to the one or two people that have rubbed me up the wrong way..trust me on that. I'm both disheartened and disillusioned with a few people here with how graphic their perceptions are with Duran's new work. To summarise, be critical, not derogatory. I'm drawing a line under this because it's taken the shine off this thread for too long. Good night. Skinburn. I want to try and say this in the absolutely most positive way. Put aside your pride for a second. Do the band a favor and let others call them out when they've made a crappy album. Let them praise the band when they've done good. Don't take it so personally! Their failures are not your own. Being a "yes" man is what led George Lucas to fumble the Star Wars prequels lol. Listen, I'm as passionate about this band as the next guy. Every time I listen to their music a flood of memories of me and my Dad come rushing back to me. I have cherished memories as a child watching his Duran Duran Laser Discs with him, music videos, documentaries, concerts etc. I lost him in 2007 to cancer, and there's never a time I can listen to this band and not think of him. Duran Duran will forever be apart of me as they were apart of him. I know that he absolutely would not be thrilled with the direction they took on this album. Wouldn't make him any less of a fan either. So please, stop antagonizing those who are disheartened by the bands new musical direction. Hopefully we can all walk away from this learning something about ourselves and other fans on this forum. I appreciate you sharing your story.

I don't know skinburn and I'm pretty new here (really I don't know why I'm bothering with this discussion except it all feels like miscommunication). But I feel like the big issue he, and perhaps others, might have with calling an entire album crap, garbage, etc., yet calling yourself a "fan" lies in being destructive. It's one thing to feel like you really just don't like it. It's something different to say they wasted their time doing it and their efforts are nothing more than poo. That's pretty much what someone is saying when they say a band's entire album is crap.
This is a fan forum so the likelihood of any band member ever reading anything here is probably nonexistent. However, there are other fans & there are a lot of lurkers who won't post ever, or for a very long time. For some of those people, a conversation about this latest album being "crap" might very well be the reason they decide they aren't interested in bothering. And some of those people might have found they actually liked the album if they had bothered...but they didn't because, well, they heard it was crap anyway so no big loss.
A discussion about what is and isn't appealing at least makes it clear why a particular person doesn't like it, rather than saying it's just garbage. I'm sure there are people who liked the RCM sound and if they read that someone doesn't really like this album because it's too much like a RCM2.0 they might think, oh well that might be something I WOULD like.
But there's not much constructive info to be gleaned from a blanket statement like, it's just crap.
(I'm hoping I'm in the right thread now because I feel like this conversation is happening somewhere else too. sorry in advance if I'm in the wrong place lol).

I don't let anyone else's opinion of music influence my own. Reviews, weather professional or written by a fan, mean nothing to me. When I express my critical opinion, I try to make it constructive. I don't simply say "this sucks." I say "this sucks because...."
I was pretty upset after hearing the first five songs as I only liked the title track, but after hearing 12 (of 18) I am absolutely loving four tracks and that's enough for me...

Perhaps the following may help calm the debate.
If one does not appreciate or like the PG album? That's a pity and unfortunately nothing can be done to change that. Hopefully the next one, no.15 will fulfil their dreams.
They have every right to express their justified honest opinion and without using inappropriate language, as there possibly could be underage readers and because it may offend other certain individuals. If their decision is to share? they may want to be prepared for some indifference in opinions, considering their honest thoughts of criticism and certain choice of words, are advocated on a DD specific forum such as this one. Many people are usually not drawn to negativity in any case.
For these individuals who DO NOT appreciate DDs most recent offering, perhaps choose another album from the DD back catalogue to re listen to, until no.15 is released. If your mind is made up, don't listen any longer to this one.
If one DOES love the PG album or they like it more than they don't?
They also have every right to express their justified honest opinion without using inappropriate language as there possibly could be underage readers and it because it may offend other individuals. If their decision is to also share? they may want to be prepared for the likelihood that their opinion is embraced with more positivity on a DD specific forum such as this one. Many people are naturally usually drawn to positivity in most cases, It inflicts positive Vibes and a feeling of well being. It's an endorphin thing !
They ought to firstly, rejoice, be thankful and grateful, find comfort and cherish with confidence that this amazing band have once again delivered some great worthy stuff in their opinion. Consider yourself fortunate (as I do) that this album moves you or that there are moments (certain songs) that move you against your will (if you like) in an infectious and positive way.
For these individuals who DO appreciate DDs most recent offering, you have no need to choose another album to urgently listen to. Listen to this one LOUD, again and again. You can add this collection to all other albums in your preferred DD album playlists or create one with your personal preferred songs, knowing you are adding rather than 'not growing' your collection of DD faves.
Hope this helps !

Well my opinion..... I can be short about this album. Simon once said something like: "Duran Duran is a band for young people to make you party". Or "Duran Duran is the band you are dancing to when the bomb drops".
Paper Gods is all that!

Hopefully we can all walk away from this learning something about ourselves and other fans on this forum. I appreciate you sharing your story. Hi mate Firstly sorry about quoting everything here. I'm using iPhone and I can't highlight and delete text easily. Thanks for your positive post. Your story about your first concert you attended with your father brought a tear. Believe it or not I am actually quite a sensitive person!! You have that wonderful memory for the rest of your life. I'm sure you think of that special day everyrime you hear a Duran song! Thanks for sharing that with us. Trust me, I don't relish fighting in the forum any more than the next person. It's very destructive I understand that. I have enough issues in my own life without adding to them. I admit, I am a catalyst for a lot of the 'crap' going back and forward. But, like you, I'm passionate about the band. Terminology used by people can have different meanings but 'stinking turd' riles me and gets my hackles up. I know not responsible for true music. But I wear the brand on my arm. I see it every day, every morning I wake up and when I go to bed. That is pride you see. I'm no better than anyone else, I'm not a bigger fan than anyone else. I may spend a lot of money on the band but its not a competition. It's my choice to do that. So if I jump on somebody it has to be bad. Describing an album by Duran as 'a stinking turd' is bad. No need for it. Just say it's rubbish, poor, awful, not worthy, terrible, atrocious, weak or whatever. So many choices. And that's why I became angry. I found the said post to be patronising aswell. Look I'm happy you've come forward as a sort of mediator. I appreciate that. I'm happy to move forward from this but I can't guarantee it won't happen again. How can I when its like a red rag to a bull? Lol Cheers and see you on the boards! And after all is said and done We're only human - Duran Duran Thanks man! Looking forward to more discussion.
