And you know this how? Where are your sources to verify this information? He doesn't have any. We already know Nick is the controller so tell us something new? Bwkk, You can't just wade in with your 'facts' if you have no evidence of this. Do you know the management? Is the source Andys book? He wouldn't have stayed because he didn't like the musical direction the band were heading..ie collaborating with Timbaland. To be honest, I can't blame him, however he left twice, once is acceptable because these things happen. But twice? No chance. It was a money spinner, pure and simple. actually, i think the pay structure in the new partnership between the original 5 was mentioned in both John's and Andy's books. it's no mystery that Andy and Roger were not brought back in as equals - they were brought in with the promise of one day becoming equal partners. big difference!. as such, the 'senior' members of the group had more say because they had more of a vested interest. additionally, Warren also had to be compensated from sales of Astronaut (maybe even RCM, but i don't think so) in the deal that dissolved his legal connection to Duran Duran.

That's something that I never got. After Pop Trash, Duran Duran were close to over. I believe Simon himself said to Nick something along the lines of "the only way I'll go on is if we get the old band back together". If Simon had left, would Nick and Warren have continued to operate as Duran Duran? Would they have hired a new vocalist, and while they're at it why not a drummer and bassist as well? Or would they just have continued using session musicians on their albums and touring instrumentalists in concert? Would they have lost fans - personally I don't know how much Duran would have continued to appeal to me if it was just Nick and Warren - if their first album together wasn't top notch then I probably would have given up. So basically for Duran Duran to continue and be a viable option Simon and Nick needed John, Roger, and Andy back or it was over. Let me repeat that - no John, Roger, and Andy - no Duran Duran. If you look at it that way then John, Roger, and Andy were vital ingredients - why pay Roger and Andy less? Sure Nick, Simon, and John (for most of the journey) had kept the Duran flag flying over the years, but why should that give them more pay for FUTURE records? They were getting the royalties from their past albums that Roger and Andy weren't, why should they get more after a reunion? Roger and Andy didn't need Simon, John, or Nick. They were happily doing their thing and Duran Duran weren't on their minds. But Nick and Simon needed the others, so that's why I think the others should have been paid the same. Duran Duran had always been a band where the five/four/three members at the time were given equal credit on each album; I don't know why they had to do that before the reunion. Doing that from the get-go would have put Roger and Andy off-side. I know I would have been annoyed if I were them. Nick, Simon, and John all had enough money, there was no need to do anything which upsets the reunited Duran's dynamics before it even begins

I'm fairly certain that there's other sides to the equation that we're not all in the know about. Legal, personal, whatever... maybe there would have been complications if Roger or Andy had backed out in the process and they had equal footing. I'm not sure if many of us would have acted the same way if there was some uncertainty for certain people. But as Andy said in his book, they at least had some sort of understanding that things would be equal once things got going. That and they were paying an ex-guitarist some of whatever they got during the reunion anyway, so there were six sides at least involved in whatever was going on.
That and Simon was contributing quite a bit for the studio costs at the beginning, so I'm sure there's other matters like that which made it a bit more complicated. We only heard one side of the story in terms of that, after all.

Coolbarn you are legend for knocking YKMWS, couldn't agree more. If I never hear that track again I won't be upset, I filed it under MEGA CRAP! Tho don't agree on Butterfly girl, too much Ross and would of liked SLB to have sung the main part of the chorus, a duet with her at a minimum anyway. Agree on Face For Today, one of my favourites. Surprised you don't like the brooding slow parts of song that take you on a little pre ride before the tunes hit in. Personally I like those touches. Anyway, as always, great contribution baring the length of course ho ho... On the note of drums by the way, I would of liked more Sin Of The City style drumming, playing this along side PG album a lot lately. Agree with most here Raze including 'Sin'. Drumming is sublime! Of course you and Cool are talking bollocks with regards to YKMWS..but you both can't be perfect!! Great read coolbarn and I am with you skinburn. I love YKMWS! I actually love the entire album apart from Danceophobia, Butterfly Girl and funnily enough Pressure Off. PO has some great funk to it, but something about it has been annoying me over time, not just the Oh Oh's, I just don't like it anymore. I still think the album is solid and great to listen to. The title track (although I agree it takes some effort to enjoy) Sunset, Dreams and Universe are my absolute favorites. I love the bonus tracks apart from Planet Roaring. Sorry I am late to the party, it took me that long to read coolbarn's review (haha and I liked it) Also, I would love a Big Thing review Skinburn. I love that album. That whole era fascinates me, the music, how strange they look on the videos and live recordings. I wish I was lucky enough to have caught them on that tour, it looks a right freakshow! I was still in diapers and I doubt the boys would have appreciated me throwing my nappie-panties at them, Ewww! I was lucky to eventually see them on the Medazzaland tour, I was still quite young but with very cool babysitters, my older Bro and Sis!

I'm still listening to the six tracks I was loving a month ago on a daily basis. Do I love it as much as AYNIN? No, but the chances of that happening was almost impossible.

Great thread, I prefer reading reviews albums after the "shiny new toy" effect wears off.
For me it's definitely an underwhelming album. It just seems to lack a lot of soul. In a way some of it reminds of RCM where it feels like others have taken control of the direction of the music and pulled it in a very non DD direction. There are also way too collaborations for my liking as it seems like almost every track is featuring someone. It doesn't at all feel like an album that was 5 years in the making it feels more like an album that was rushed together using other people's ideas with a few DD style songs thrown in.
Paper Gods What a terrible intro. It would have to be right up there with Simon's falsetto at the start of Skin Trade as one of the worst intros to any DD song. The song itself is passable, but that long drawn out intro is horrible and that kills any momentum that song could ever have.
Last night in the city This is the start of the problems with the direction of this album, now on it's own it's a solid track and I actually like it, but where the hell are the guitars ? Besides Simon's voice there is nothing Duran Duran about this song at all.
YKMWS Okay this is an interesting one, the first thing I thought of when I heard this track was that DD had tried to make another Leopard. Now for me, I completed hated Leopard but this time around the strong chorus makes this attempt a far better one and I actually don't mind this at all.
Pressure Off The first time I heard it, I was blown away. I loved it, definitely the strongest lead single that DD have released in a while. A couple of months later I still love it and think it will continue to be one of my favourite DD songs.
Face for today This goes back to Last night in the city, another reasonable track, but doesn't at all feel like a DD song.
Danceaphobia I actually like it as a song. Once again there is nothing Duran Duran at all about this song, but could actually see this being a success commercially if it were to receive airplay.
What are the chances This is a return to the traditional DD sound. I do like it, but there's nothing overly original about it, it reminds me a lot of Finest Hour from Astronaut plus a number of others.
Sunset garage This is is Terrible with a capital T, listening to it brings back horrible memories of Time For Temptation from The Wedding Album.
Change the skyline Once again where on earth is the guitar and the DD sound ?? The song is okay, but the slow chorus really kills this one.
Butterfly Girl This seems to have a better balance of guitar and electro rhythm, unfortunately though Simon has taken too much of a back seat for this one vocally. That said though it's one of the stronger tracks on the album.
Only in Dreams This seems to plod along a bit, but the song is saved by its really catchy hook and chorus.
The universe alone What is going on with the distortion at the end of the track. Good idea in theory, but doesn't really work and is just painful when you're listening through headphones.

Almost one month has passed since the release of the album. I must say I changed my mind on most of the tracks. While at the beginning I found 'unforgivable' the use of so much electronic, but now my feelings are different:
1. PG: the intro is actually slow, but the song grows for me and I am satisfied with such a long duration, which is not typical for DD. As in most of the album, it's Simon who makes the difference.
2. LNITC: I have listened to it a couple of times. I always skip it. The banal electronic drumming reminds me of Timbaland somehow... *shivers*.
3. YKMWS: nice... the intro is very cheap, still Simon manages to lift it with the chorus.
4. PO: when it came out I almost hated it, now I like it because at least there are some live instruments.
5. FFT: for me it's maybe the best song of the album. Fresh, uplifting, even if a bit too much electronic. I like how Simon switches verses in the refrain. He rarely does it, as far as I remember.
6. D: skip it for heaven's sake! Just joking, but nothing special. And as I do for track 2, I always skip track 6 as well, I just don't bother listening to it.
7. WATC: I like to keep listening to it, this one and FFT. The guitar is good and Simon is great. Maybe a bit tooooooo stretched the voooooowels, in fact I found funny that in the second verse he stops 'chances' a bit sooner then the rest of the song. The song gives me goosebumps, and the merit goes to Simon and John Frusciante.
8. SG: sounds like a song for a cartoon.
9. CTS: the fourth favourite of the album.
10. BG: not so electronics, therefore I like listening to it, although I don't find it a masterpiece.
11. OID: very original, I think it's nice and fun to listen to.
12. TUA: I love it, third favourite, or maybe second together with WATC. I don't listen to music with headphones, but I really like the distortion effect, and also JF's guitar.
Bonus tracks: I managed to listen to PR a couple of times, and it's nice, I don't know about the other two, I listened to them not paying very much attention because they don't seem to be masterpieces either... but I will do it in the future.

I think the album and extras and extras together are very strong and very different to a degree to a lot of their collection which is super consistent!
Paper Gods Rocks!!!!
