Very underwhelmed so far. Nothing grabbing me at this point and I don't foresee it becoming a "grower" either.
If we were to compare DD and DM, Spirit, like the previous 3, only elevates my opinion of DD's reunion output. Paper Gods, while far from perfect, had quite a few compelling songs. Even RCM was engaging as a stylistic departure.
Albums like Spirit and Songs of Innocence only make me respect DD more.

Listened to it several times now and I must say Paper Gods is far superior to Spirit. I really like “going backwards“, but that to me is already the highlight of the album. The songs that Martin sings, are particulary weak.

Cover Me is sublime! ...the instrumental ending is by far some of the most exciting things in years, and Dave is on top of his game!
Hail to the king!

You Move, So Much Love and No More are the stand outs so far for me. They are Violator-esque: great grooves, old school John Carpenter synths and guitar stabs.
The rest is what I imagine the rough version of Reportage may have sounded like: angry and political but fairly flat from a songwriting/sonic standpoint.

Did anybody see the conference/interview Depeche Mode did in NYC the other night? It seems DM fans have the same setlist hangups we all have with Duran.
A fan stated a typical live DM set is about 20 songs and asked if they could extend it to 30. Dave Gahan said it sounds like a good idea, but if they were to do sets that long they would probably have a lot of cancellations because it is too much on the vocal chords. I had to laugh, because Dave always gets a rest because Martin always does a few songs.
Andy Fletcher, trying to sound funny, was saying no band can play everything unless you are The Cure. He said Robert Smith just stands there with his guitar and Dave is a born dancer.
That annoyed me. Andy Fletcher doesn't play a note live, he just claps his hands and mimes. The other members of The Cure are brilliant musicians and play their instruments for well over three hours a night. I understand Dave and Simon are much more entertaining than Robert Smith, but Robert plays some pretty impressive guitar while singing. You can't say he is just standing there.

Did anybody see the conference/interview Depeche Mode did in NYC the other night? It seems DM fans have the same setlist hangups we all have with Duran. 99 percent of the fan bases have those same discussions online, actually. Even Springsteen and Pearl Jam, the supposed two exceptions to playing the same stuff every night, have their own share of fan complaints about “phoning it in”, or doing half or seven whatever songs that they played the night before, etc. Perhaps, but I don’t think many of us are privy to what exactly inspired a band to play 18 or 30+ songs a night. Maybe Gahan or Simon can’t actually do 20+ songs a night with the notes they hit? Maybe the band members can’t go beyond 2 hours anymore without making the show suffer a bit. Who knows?

Spirit SUCKS! It's the worst album of DM, I'm really sad cause a new DM album is always very much welcomed, but Spirit is just noise. Yeah... I'm not digging it either. I only think it's interesting that they made an album which doesn't have much obvious single material on it. It may grow on me, but it's a little hard to sit through. I already like it a lot more than Delta Machine and Exciter. Well, I guess Spirit is just a different approach, it's not for everybody. It's now growing on me, but it's still their weakest work. Anyway, I think they rushed a new album just as an excuse to promote the new world tour.
