Great work!!! Thanx a lot!!!!!! This is really nice indeed, well done After a bit of sleep & some coffee - obviously comments like these are criticism as well... ...as it's been very useful to know that, in general, we're on the right track with it all.
Yeah, i realised in re-reading what i'd written earlier today that it could have been read that it was only the few people giving specific notes that we were grateful for.

Wow! That is truly amazing work! Thank you so much for doing this! I don’t think my sister and I were ever part of the fan club—maybe just the tail end. So having something like this is invaluable. Thank you for taking the time to gather all the materials together like this! This is the kind of publication I wish the band would do, to carefully document each and every piece of merchandise they have put out, from records to postcards.
And the design is truly special. I love how the design mimics the 81-82 era. I imagine it will change to reflect the time frame the chapter is covering? I too am an art director/designer as a profession, and have to credit the incredible work of Malcolm Garrett/Assorted Images as my inspiration. I also love how each piece is given its own page and is very elegantly and simply placed on the page, with all sides represented, honoring the piece as an artifact. The object is the focus of the layout, and it makes it easy for the viewer to study each piece. Really great work.
Thank you for doing this, Tim and Pierre! Exceptional work!

The object is the focus of the layout, and it makes it easy for the viewer to study each piece. Really great work. Thank you for doing this, Tim and Pierre! Exceptional work! Whilst obviously there's bits of discussion about (usually) tiny details, there's a good reason why Pierre has the sole credit for the design; & it really does look great imho as well.
& yes, that's exactly what's going to be happening - altering the designs as we go through the years - whilst, as with the 81-82 fc year, when the design doesn't hugely change then having a slight variation (as with the logo colour in this part) to distinguish between the two so that it's clear when we're moving from one set of stuff to the next.
As to the band documenting everything... Well, i believe that Nick's collection is in somewhere in excess of 70,000 different items - however even that's nowhere near complete when it comes to the number of things that are out there; esp with all of the licensing deals that were done back in the day; random promo stuff; items that were, for example, created by venues or TV companies or whatever for specific events; etc, etc.
Just taking one type of memorabilia an example, i think (as i've not counted in a long time - & there's a load being shipped from Canada) that i have well over 500 shirts in 'the collection', & i strongly doubt that i'm even approaching half of a complete set.
Then there's collectors like Peter who, amongst other things, find huge joy in discovering minor variations in sleeve & label design for the music releases - whereas, ttbomk, i don't believe that anyone in the band's ever cared about this.
& there's obviously unique items that fans have managed to get hold of - so the BT bass is owned by someone in the US, the gun/viewing scope from AVTAK is owned by one of the European fans, i have the painted Rio canvas from the launch party & the prototype model of Drum, some people have acquired items of stage & video clothing (not least from when Warren was selling things), Derek's got one of Roger's drum kits, etc, etc...
it's just impossible for anyone to catalogue everything - so the options are to either give an overview of a time period (which is what Derek's Legacy project will be when Durantime allows it to get out there) or to try to be very defined in what's being looked at (which is what, for example, Tom & Ansgar's 'versions of Rio' did (www.ionpool.net/duran/rio.html) going back, what Andy Golub's done &, hopefully, what we're doing)...
...& it's something where i think the fans are actually much better equipped to try to do justice to - not least because we actively care about all of this nonsense.
Yeah, so whilst i know full well that a million different posters or the fc stuff or whatever won't explicitly be everyone's individual thing, my hope would be that it's a little bit of inspiration towards more fan projects like this being undertaken; as there's some real expert knowledge out there that could be shared...
...&, as with this project, where i wholly expect that at least someone will come up with something that i've never seen before &/or remember something that results in corrections, it's also a very good way for the people creating to increase their knowledge of whatever bit of Duran they're really into.

LOL! I know you say that doing such an extensive and exhaustive cataloging of every single piece of memorabilia and ephemera is impossible, but what you describe is exactly what I would LOVE! I would love to see all the different variants of a single cover for all the different countries and territories! I would love to see what specific venues have done independent of the band and their management! And I would love to see all the different t-shirts you’ve amassed over the years! I know it’s impossible, but a guy can dream, can’t he? Like you said, a more realistic option is just to give an overview. Tom & Ansgar’s website is a great resource and it actually makes it seem like doing this level of research and detail is attainable. He’s already done two albums—just 13 more to go! But maybe a compromise is just to document items with moderate to significant changes from one variant to another. Let me say again: fantastic work, gentlemen!

This.... :-) A friend of mine, also from Holland, has got it in his collection. Exactly - though i couldn't recall where your friend lived... Or rather, for some unknown reason, over the last few days then i've kept on having Belgium pop into my head for all manner of things that have nothing to do with the country - but it keeps on confusing me. LOL! I know you say that doing such an extensive and exhaustive cataloging of every single piece of memorabilia and ephemera is impossible, but what you describe is exactly what I would LOVE! Oh, certainly it would be cool to have that, but i think the way to make it ish manageable would be for fans to target the elements that they most enjoy - as opposed to hoping that a corporately planned official project would create this.
Yeah to simplify things, on one hand, it's probably only the avid collectors of any particular element of the stuff who know the level of detail & differentiation that's needed...
...&, on the other, they'd (probably sensibly) question the number of people who would buy a book showing, say, a thousand detailed images of largely semi-identical versions of Rio, with all of the alt labels & minor printing changes & matrix numbers & whatnot... ...since an official project would always be after at least breaking even financially rather than purely out of love for the thing.
i'm not saying there are literally 1000 - it's (probably) hyperbole... ...though i'm sure that Peter would have a good idea of the actual number.

That means A LOT to me coming from another designer Thnx for your very kind words...I hope you like what I did to the other parts as well. Its exactly going to be like you said...Every part will mimic/follow the design of that time period...its been a lot of work figuring out the correct fonts that were used, re-making a lot of logos and icons and fonts in Illustrator and making sure the whole thing has some sort of continuous design line along each part as well.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me really proud to be a Duran Duran fan, and Pierre and Tim have been so humble about it all... really lads I'm gonna stick a link up on the DD board!! And I will certainly make a book from the finished product when it's done, much as I value the generosity of your intention to offer it for free I simply must have a physical copy!!! I had also hoped duranasty might do something similar, I have asked but he as skillfukly avoided answering LOL! If a few people are interested in a physical product we might put our heads together as to how to make it happen. My faith in DD fans has been a bit shaky of late and lads you've just warmed this fans heart immensely. Thank you Thnx Ruth Means a lot to me coming from you...very glad you like our 'little' project
