Speaking of Taylor Swift... I can't stand her, but I just heard her new single "Look What You Made Me Do"
The song is pretty sexy and it sounds like it could have been inspired by Paper Gods. It would fit perfectly on that album. Swift has stolen Duran's (sound of) Thunder.
Who am I kidding? Duran made a run of the mill pop album with Paper Gods. Swift is just doing run of the mill pop.

Kids run all over my town wearing Joy Division and Lou Reed T-shirts, Trendy, I know. But,when I run around in a Duran shirt I get compliments from Taylor Swift fans and snickers and scowls from the hipsters.. "Just a minute, I'll slip something Off... Can You Hear Me Now?" People are weird! Interesting that you bring up the shirts thing. A lot of times, I do wonder if the people who wear them even know much about the artist they’re promoting there. I’m sure a lot of them do and are fans, know most of the songs, etc. But I’ve become a little convinced over the years that a lot of them also sort of wear them for the trend of wearing them too. For example, I grew up a bit in the aftermath of Kurt Cobain’s suicide, and there was awhile there wear I saw those “1967-1994” shorts of his constantly (and after a few years, just the “Nirvana” shirts and such). Now looking back at it, I can’t help but wonder if some people wore them because they were genuine fans - which I’m sure some did, or if they sort of wore them because it was somehow hip to pay tribute to someone that was now gone – or maybe just for the fact that they thought Smells Like Teen Spirit and Heart-Shaped Box were catchy and knew none of the other songs. I would look at some of these people and think to myself how there’s no way they know songs like, say, Polly or Scentless Apprentice, that sort of thing. I liked some of their material enough over the years, even though I was never a huge fan, and I probably knew even more of their catalog than some of those people! Odd thinking about it… Anywho, there are younger fans out there for sure. This held up over going to shows on the recent tour and even beyond that. I went to a concert for a different act two months ago and befriended and older woman and her daughter (mid-20's or so). They both attended the local Paper Gods show I saw and the Mom had saw them on their 1984 tour. Her daughter loved Paper Gods, particularly the title track and What Are the Chances, which I thought was neat.

I swear I thought about writing It sounds like a Paper Gods version of ALL She Want Is, with a hint of Too Sexy without knowing RSF got a credit... That's hilarious, I wish I wrote that in the first place. Brill 😂

Most of my friends just think Duran are sellouts. It's been hard to argue that for a while now. I lost a lot of respect back when they started selling tickets to meet them at shows to be honest. Always felt that opportunity should have been a randomly chosen freebie from a list of whoever had bought tickets for the show. I wouldn't want to ever meet/speak to anyone, let alone someone who I had supported in the form of purchasing their work and show tickets for many years, when I knew they were only doing so because I had paid them. I wouldn't really consider meet and greets something of a bad thing, as it's always been done to some extent and is fairly standard for a lot of bands today. Stuff like "early entry" for paying extra on a GA ticket is gaining a bit of steam nowadays too, so it's just the nature of the beast in a way. If people are willing to pay, then stuff like that is going to be offered. Simple as that. As for the "selling out" aspect, this is coming from a music act that sold it's own board game (among other non-music related merchandise) back in the day. So even if there's a hipster vs. mainstream coming into play regarding a band's popularity or how they handle it, well, there's something to consider. This band wasn't exactly an underground niche act back in the day, other than maybe the few years at the Rum Runner.

I won't be there, but I really hope we get a decent live recording. Hopefully it won't be John on synthbass and Roger uses a decent drum sound. I would probably love this song, if it wasn't for the electro sound. It has a fantastic melody, I just can't stand the production on PG Totally agree Jen! The songwriting on Paper Gods is, overall, very strong. As mentioned a myriad of times on this forum if you were to replace the crappy tunes on the album with the superior bonus tracks it could have been brilliant. Then re-record it with analogue instruments and it is going to be better again - almost as good as AYNIN in fact. That would have made two brilliant albums in a row from Duran Duran, something they haven't done since Notorious/Big Thing. As a traditionalist, and not somebody who flip-flops like a busted thong saying current music sucks but somehow magically becomes brilliant when Duran Duran decide to record some, that is how I would have organised things. But I'm in the minority, so go figure. I guess that's the danger of making a "current" sounding album. First and foremost the album is going to sound dated a lot sooner than it might otherwise. And secondly you run the risk of alienating fans who aren't enamoured with a heavily electronic sound and actually want to hear brilliant John Taylor basslines for example. But a lot of fans love it. And the band loves it. And the three teenagers who hadn't heard of Duran Duran before they discovered this fantastic new dance track called Last Night In The City from a band of 60 year old men probably love it as well. So mission accomplished! I love the electro sound but then I am a fan of synth groups like kraftwerk, tangerine dream, alphaville, icehouse, human league, YMO, and depeche mode. I think most here prefer guitar rock like U2 and REM. That's good too but I like DD to sound electronic. Save a prayer and HLTW work better with the synths. And Big Thing was a dance record, much weaker than notorious. The best track on AYNIN was the most electro - leopard. Remember Rio was "run of the mill" pop in the 80s. I can't honestly see a difference between notorious and pressure off or between the reflex and valentine stones.
