...aaaaaaand, he's gone. What a jackass. Came in as a new member, insulted someone's post over in the Simon "grope" allegation thread (it really was a dumb post, I agree, but when you're a forum newbie it's not recommended to come in guns blazing attacking veteran posters) with his first or second post, and then stirs the sh*t in this thread, all while claiming people aren't being "polite". Good riddance!

I never really understood why people has this thing called "Nick can´t play" or whatsoever... Nick has given us so much, so many brilliant moments, feelings...the music.. I really don´t understand why people keeps on bashing him and his workmanship. Because this is a forum on which we discuss everything about Duran Duran.... great response!

I know we have touched on this a few times. But how much is Nick playing and how much is their session player playing, The session player is the great John Jones. He doesn’t get enough credit for what he did with TWA or the arrangements he played on. In fact he doesn’t get any credit now. Nick just stands there and uses one finger when needed. I’m surprised you asked that Andre!! I know..but 1.25 minutes in.. Nick sitting on a Grand Piano and playing with TWO Hands..so is he really playing or mimicking..lol Nick creates sound scapes and in my opinion..nobody does it better than him! There will never be another SAP and Leopard! Beautiful!!!

It's true, Nick has limited abilities as a keyboardist-- but he has managed to make as much out of what he can do as anyone else on his skill level. I admire this a lot, because I myself play keyboards in a very limited capacity, and I would be thrilled to be blessed with half of Nick's musical creativity and artistic gifts. To me, he represents the absolute pinnacle of what a musician who falls short of true proficiency can achieve.

It's a pity we loose newbie's because the some of us who have been here for sometime are too direct so early on a newbie who has recently joined and therefore the newbie doesn't have the time & experience to get the feel of the board. This isn't my opinion without putting any thought into it, it's actually my experience on this board (from when I joined) which I base my opinion on.
Let's not forget some people both newbie's and (somewhat) oldies like me visit this board for a desire to attain a positive inspiration and to feel a certain belonging (to a DD club if you like). Think the KISS Army.
It's ones desired "basic instinct" when they have had a love affair (in my case with DD) for 38 years.
But people express their love in different ways some express their opinion with a total positive mindset like I like to do, others want their opinionated criticism totally heard and others I guess like to nag their opinion across. Everybody loves differently is what I'm elluding to.
If I want to deeply critize the thing I love (which I must say I don't often feel the need) I would prefer to do it on another section of the board where people visit looking for an objective/critical perspective regularly visit and I wouldnt have the belief that "but if I post it there nobody will read it" because that in my opinion is an egotistical individuals response. Kinda like implying "you will hear/read my DD bashing opinion like it or not because you visited the board".
I'm not pointing the finger at anyone here in particular, just looking at the bigger picture which is that it's a SAD thing to push away newbie's off/from the board that's all, I feel for them, but then that's just me. Everybody's different. Like I said I joined for positive reinforcement of my beliefs in DD hence why I still visit.
It's like a newbie in a new role at a new job, if you have been with the company and are inducting them so to speak you don't treat them nor expect their contribution/opinion/thoughts within the organisation (in this case this board) to be equal to others within the first few weeks compared to others contribution/opinion/thoughts have been doing the job for ages. It's psychological thinking but not everybody thinks this way coz their opinion/perspective and desire rules their life while enriches their ego, I guess.
In regards to DD what long time fans ought to realise is that DD have "no stylistic boundary" therefor they play any musical "rock/pop/indie/r&b" genre they wish too, it keeps it interesting for them and therefore thankfully we have got them here still to this day !
Hallelujah.
Back to this threads point.
IMO Call him what you like and Nick may not be the world's greatest musician but anyone who knows and understands DD would get that his intelligence certainly transcends thru his musical ability and vision over the past 40 years and with that said THERE WOULD BE NO DD (as we know them) without Nick DOING EXACTLY WHAT HE HAS DONE DURING THE PAST 40 YEARS.
It's not rocket science that both TALENT & VISION COME IN MANY FORMS !
We're talking about the only DD member here who has been in DD since the day dot coz Let's face it no other DD member has !!!
Let's give him some credit and if one is an individual who can't help but critique him let's do it in a balanced and diplomatic non offensive way. But then not everybody has the same insight I suppose?
If you're reading bartolo, feel free to personally message me coz I like you agree and don't understand why people keep bashing him, we have that in common my fellow DD enthusiast !

So does anyone know the answer to Andre's question or did I miss that post (is he always miming when you see him playing is the real question I guess)?
For me, I love Nick's contributions. I don't really care that he can't do the prog-rock keyboardist thing. I like what he does do. He's a Synthisist not a keyboardist.
But there are times when I don't enjoy what he's doing and that mainly has to do with balance on recordings. When the whole thing sounds like it came out of one of his machines I don't like that (overproduction). However, when they have a producer who knows what they're doing managing that things are good.

To me Nick is a soundpainter/architect... he paints deep soundscapes in a studio environment that are truly unique to him and that very often 'shape' or 'define' the core of a song.
Just listen to the 'synths' part of the multitrack for 'The Reflex' to understand what I mean. Melodic/spheric wise he very often 'makes' the song instantly identifiable in an instant...that's a very valuable skill/asset to any band.
If you compare Nick to an art form Nick is a Post-impressionist and he has his own voice/signature. He is NOT a live painter, he shines in the studio....and in a live situation he just brings along the finished paintings that he worked very hard on to perfect, he then 'enhances' certain nuances of the paintings live.

Agree with RTM. A few times a year the questions relating to Nick's playing abilities come up, and the same conclusions are always reached. Nick is not a technical wizard but a mental one - he comes up with great ideas and is an excellent songwriter. Like anything it depends on the emphasis on which you place things. If you come from a musical background and are a very accomplished musician yourself then you would probably laugh at Nick's "average" playing ability. However if you just love what he brings to the table, which most of us here do, then those frailties can be easily overlooked. The funny thing is - both parties are right. Relatively speaking, Nick is a below-average performer technically compared to his contemporaries. However he is a well above-average writer and composer which more than makes up for this. There is nothing wrong with saying or believing that Nick can't play, just like there is nothing wrong with saying he is a genius. To varying degrees they are both true

I often compare/see Nick as a Brian Peter George Eno type otherwise knows as Brian Eno or simply Eno nevertheless a "non-musician" if you like.
Eno's interests were a variety of unique conceptual approaches and recording techniques into contemporary music, advocating a methodology of "theory over practice" throughout his career.
If you listen to the first two Roxy Music LPs you will hear the kind of thing I mean, most notably in the form of twiddling knob sounds/electronic emphasis. In the early 70's this sound was so futuristic and IMO still innovative to this day.
Thing is due to creative differences and a gaining Eno popularity, the other Bryan with a "y" err wasn't sure if that's what he envisaged for the band he formed and so it resulted in Eno parting ways. This gave E the time and opportunity to release solo ambient or generative LPs and his move towards producing/collaborating with others, such as Grace jones, U2, Talking Heads, Fripp, Coldplay, Genesis, Daniel Lanois, Bowie, Devo and Damon Albarn, while remixing official releases for the likes of Depeche Mode and Massive Attack. On LPs Eno has been credited with creating/playing sonic awareness, sonic ambience, sonic emphasis, swoop treatments, sonic distress or simply Enossification
Imagine what our Nick may have done if after producing Kajagoogoo's number one (before DD ever had a their first No. 1) had he left DD. Not that NR wanted to ever leave DD but nevertheless I bet DD got him back quick smart in order he experiment with his producing ideas towards DD's work. That's logic hey, I'm therefore grateful that this actually was the case indeed, I bet we are all thankful that we have more than two DD LPs with nick on them. One listen to The Dandy Warhols brilliant Welcome to the monkey house LP suggests he could have easily done it. Again I'm grateful like many of us that he remained with DD throughout his career.
Wasn't the intro to RIO the song Nicks idea of a tape loop played backwards of a recorded sound of metal rods hitting a grand piano's strings !
For 1982 that type of experimentation was IMO the stuff of a genius, right on par with and the kinda thing that "Brian Peter George St Le Baptiste de la Salle Eno" might do
Yes folks, that's his full name, it's no wonder he cut it to simply Eno !!!
