I'm not a fan of "Annie's War" at all. Not a good title, but as an instrumental it would have been a working title... remember Larald Crystal?

I wondered about that too. Annie's War fits the same syllables as Say the Word. And the verse lyrics would kinda work for a song about "War" too, with phrases like, "with a will to survive beneath this rule" and "waste the lives of the young and innocent", etc. Simon might have just needed to tweak the chorus lyrics and shoehorn in the Play for Keeps line.
Did you guys ever watch the movie? I have to confess I never did. It looked pretty cheesy to me even back then and I was probably its target audience at 14 years old. But if the "Annie's War" lyrics were mostly set, then it was almost serendipity that it suited the themes of the movie about young kids going against the establishment.

Interestingly saw China Crisis live at the weekend and Gary Daly told a story that Virgin had lined them up with the theme song to a film in 1985/6. It was called 'Best Kept Secret' and the song was done and sent over (UK no 36 hit in 1987) The band forgot about it, until the film was released at the cinemas, now called 'Playing For Keeps' and were mightily annoyed to find themselves dumped to the closing credits. Wonder when Arcadia were involved?! Best kept secret is a great China Crisis song and nearly one of the 1st cd singles released. Proud to say still have cd single in gatefold cd sleeve.

Neither Nick or Simon believe that Roger played the drums on this particular track, they believe it was Steve Jordan. Katy” Why not ask Roger himself.....? VERY good point.

I wish the mix that was actually played in the film would see the light of day. IIRC, it's somewhat different than anything that's been officially released.
