However IMO its not Warren's fault or Joe's that they're drowning out Simon but rather "they" who are in charge of the gigs mixing console.
In terms of Dom's playing of Anyone Out There, after watching this video...
It seems like he's playing the parts technically like the album version. The Dm variations and the Dm-F-C-G riffs all appear to be right. The only thing that I could think of as being technically different is the tone. But again, that depends on just about everything... who's playing, the guitar and amp set-up being used, the type of precision you play these things with, etc. Unless you're the original guy doing it AND have that background to have fans justify whatever you're doing, you're almost never going to be 100 percent in the eyes of whoever.
That being said, I think the band does give Dom some leeway in terms of how he interprets things. And maybe that's because they've always had some turnover at the position anyway over the years - at least relatively speaking, since Dom's quickly coming up to Warren's length of time in being a touring member of the band! But after playing and hearing this stuff for so long myself, I'm pretty sure Dom's capable of playing everything as close to verbatim as possible. He's just too experienced not too.
I'll put it this way: if the band gave Dom a soundboard copy of everything Andy played with the band in 2005 - or Warren/etc. for the songs he worked on - and said "Figure out a way to play this as close to this style and tone as humanly possible," he'd probably be able to do it. I just don't think that was ever a priority in the band's eyes (and for most other bands, it probably isn't anyway). And, maybe, they don't want to just impose one style of play on a guy's natural playing ability.
The one song I can think of as an example is "Nice". Dom's always played the main riff a bit differently that what Andy plays... and since even I can play what Andy does on the album, there's really no reason why Dom couldn't either. But like I said, I think it's just one of the things where the rest of the band goes "meh" and moves on from it. Kind of like Warren did when he didn't play stuff like Planet Earth verbatim either (although, as pointed out, stuff like Anyone Out There and such came pretty close). Or Andy when he did Come Undone, etc.
But yeah... I think it's always going to be something where people are just different people. Even when I've tried to record instrumental demos of Duran songs at my home, I can get stuff relatively close if I play around with the presets, know the chords, and so forth. But it's never going to 100 percent sound like them because, simply put, I'm not them. I can't time things to the "t" in every case or play the Ordinary World lead lines with the pull-offs and hammer-ons finesses that Warren does. That and the fact that I have maybe 3 percent of the talent of these guys, but my point stands!
Sorry meant to say New Religion NR not Nick Rhodes--how come you didn't ask him his playing on New Religion not sounding like the original?
