As for DD, i am not sure if they are ever going to make an impact again.

While I agree DD catering to rich oligarchs is kinda icky (although I can't blame them--a job's a job), I certainly don't think the NASA performance falls into that category. It's an event to commemorate a momentous achievement in science and humanity and I'm proud of them for being included in the celebration. I think it was a perfect pairing as well, with DD's penchant for writing sci fi-y tinged songs (which was one of the things I found attractive about their music in the first place).
Also, I thought their Walking on the Moon sounded pretty good! I grew up with the Police right along side DD and have been listening to that song from the beginning. My cousin, who shepherded my and my sister's introduction to DD, was a huge Police/Sting fan so she was sure to indoctrinate us to his music. Many of you know that I'm not a big fan of DD's live performances. But even I have to admit that they have been sounding pretty great live for the past several years.
As far as ever making an impact again, sadly I do have to agree with that. And it's not because of poor music. The general public simply cannot accept DD as anything more than a nostalgia 80s band. Even to this day, people don't know they still put out albums of new material with regularity (even if it's 5 years between albums!). When I started my current job a few years ago, I was chatting with a work mate and he asked what music I was into. I told him DD and he was surprised and one of the first things he asked was if they were still together or making music. And I told him YES! I told him they put out albums all the time and had just put one out (Paper Gods). Granted he isn't into contemporary music--he likes more Dylan type stuff. But just shows that the general public simply don't know they're out there.

Can't do reggae? They weren't trying to! They just did their take on the song, made it theirs. Like any good band would. (Of course you're still free not to like it) What is this mindset some people have about a cover should sound exactly like the original? What would be the point? Just go listen to the original then. ( My apologies if this isn't what you meant--it's just something I've noticed lately)

Duran are a dinosaur band, in their late 50's or early 60's so having the same impact as they did in 1984, 1994 or even 2004 is unlikely.
As far as the UK is concerned noone will know anything until the next album appears, then there will be a blizzard of promotion and some tour dates
When I mention Depeche Mode to people, most dont even remember them, let alone any specific song. If it makes people feel better the much hyped Madonna album fell out of the Billboard charts in 2 weeks.
I'd love to have been at the Space Center for this show, it's an excellent place to visit (if you're interested in the space program). I'm sure eco- mentalists would not allow anything like this to happen today, but it was a different time back then.

I was at the show and I am not a rich American and I am pretty sure most of the people at the show were not rich Americans. I saw a lot of people like myself working class people that have families and were just out for a fun night. One of my favorite things about being at Duran Duran shows now is being in the presence of other Duranies. It was great to be hanging out with people who share my appreciation for this band. I don't care about mass appeal for Duran Duran now. They had mass appeal at one time in their career. I am just thrilled that they are still creating new music.

So sad to see that this band that originated from the very British DIY movement in the 70s is now catering exclusively to rich Americans and moguls. BTW did anybody do the math on the carbon footprint of this totally useless moon program? It was a cold war vanity project, nothing more. Meanwhile we have about 30 threads on this one off show... Just to clarify, I liked your first paragraph. I think it’s important for the progress of Science to conquer projects like moon walks and the like. We need to keep looking for other life forms and I think the moon landing is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s a step to more research and explorations of other planets. Certainly not in our lifetime but it’s important for our children’s children. The world has to strive to safeguard our own futures. I don’t mean to sound dramatic (or nutty) but we really do need to know about the universe. I find it very interesting. As for the band exclusively catering for Americans and moguls - that’s where the money is. They’ll go wherever the dollar sign glints. The U.K. hardly shows any sign of interest in the band now. I don’t think the media helped in the late 80’s through the 90’s. Even the great comeback of The Wedding Album wasn’t enough to spearhead a revival. I recall the album doing well but it spluttered, made a platinum and then bombed. The band never truly recovered. The longer they stay in the USA the harder it will be to make an impact (small or large) any where else ever again.. The band hardly got any press over here for The Space Center. I was watching. I subscribe to the important ‘broadsheets’ and kept an eye out. It’s all about the USA now and so called ‘reviews’ from amateurs in trashy news sites who just copy and paste the fact sheets. Anybody watching what A-Ha are doing right now? I have it on good authority that in 2020 early--band will be hitting UK for tour and maybe Europe..I think also they are trying to build momentum with new album? 40 yr anniversary and they probably want butts in the seats in Europe so as to say to the fans--hey Duran is in town--we haven't seen them live in ages--let's go!!!...so you heard it here...UK tour early next year!!!

Age discrimination...record companies, radio, etc don't want to play older musicians music on the radio--you can have a great album--it doesn't matter--it's all about the tour these days! But hey give Duran credit--they are still around making NEW music and touring-can't ask much for that as many new bands have come and gone and all the music on today's radio by the young artists is FORGETTABLE...

As long as they keep making music, and I get to see them live from time to time I'm happy with that- they wont be around forever, so I'll enjoy the opportunities I get

Small correction Andre, no UK tour early next year but after the album drops which will be in Spring but we all know it will not be sooner than Summer... ;-) But seeing is believing and hopefully they'll hit mainland Europe too.

Of course DD plays more Gigs in the US than in Europe. Why play to 1500 at best in Germany, when you can Play to 15000 in the States. That's where the majority of their fan base is. It's the same story with Depeche Mode, who we're never as big in the UK as here in Germany, where they can fill the biggest stadiums several times during summer and add arena tours through winter.
