I've been googling with my dirty fingers err again and came across this mix which TBH I'd never ever heard before
I apologise if this mix has been posted here before, thing is I can't remember hearing it.
Now it ain't bad yet ain't outstanding either, however good atempt. I wish the verses were a little more together and perhaps as a piece, it does go on a little too long.
Yet I give the creator of this mix a nod for trying.......umm where DD didn't !
Not sure if many others have heard or are familiar with it ?
After hearing it, one thing does make wonder and that is what would an official AVTAK DD extended mix 85 release have sounded like? & how different would it have been to this one?
I know DD were a fractured unit at the time however considering it was such a massive hit, I'm perplexed that there was never a 12 inch released at the time, just like there was with every single DD release before it and to an extent after it.
Thoughts ?

Aren't you aware of the 12 inch version that leaked a few years ago ? That's probably as close to how an official AVTAK DD extended mix 85 release would have sounded like. The only difference is it wasn't released. I just watched the Top of the Pops special on the year 1985. In it was an interview with Paul Hardcastle who kept AVTAK from the n°1 spot in the UK. He did so - delibarately - by releasing multiple mixes of "19" so fans of the song bought multiple copies. In hindsight, the absence of an official 12" for AVTAK just might have been the reason the song stalled at n°2 in the UK... Here's a link to the discussion on this board on that official remix : duranduranboard.proboards.com/thread/33047/view-12-remix

BTW I detested that song of his! DETESTED IT! And I never knew or realized mixes counted in the tally for singles. I somehow thought it was separate and that artists risked cannibalizing their sales figures by releasing multiple versions of their single/album.

They all count. That was also the main reason for the double digipack singles in the early and mid nineties

Just wondering why you detested it m ? I remember many people being appalled at the songs topic being transformed into a dance anthem which people would therefore joyfully party too. Hence desensitising the subject matter eg horror & total utter waste of a nineteen year old killing themselves in war all the while the artist (Paul) makes millions from doing so. I also believe that Paul never had the rights/permission to use news footage and video clips/voice segments of actual soldiers yet this was all to late when multiple versions of the song were released to create interest in it and get it to its number 1 position If any of the above is why you detested it, I totally get it.

Sadly, none of those reasons. I was probably too young (I was around 12) to know or understand the full story like you have outlined. That all makes me hate it even more! I think I remember hearing recently-ish about him not having permission for the samplings.
No, my unbridled hatred for it was based on plain old taste. I couldn't run fast enough to the radio to turn it off or change the station. D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-D-Destruction!

Maybe you should just watch Top of The Pops 1985.
In those days, the early days of sampling, clearing a sample apparently wasn't even considered nor was it viewed as a crime to use a sample. You cannot judge the past with 2019 laws and ethical codes.
Paul let the TV production company, that had originally made the documentary he used to create the song, make the video for 19. So I don't think there were hard feelings between both parties.
The narrator, Peter Thomas, was paid royalties for the use of his voice in the song.
Here's the Top Of The Pops Special on 1985 :
The conclusion can only be : -Paul Hardcastle reached n°1 because he released multiple 12 inches of "19" while Duran Duran didn't release a 12" at all. -AVTAK reached n°1 in the US because many people there viewed "19" as anti-american so it stalled at the 15th place there.
And guess what Arcadia did with Election Day, the first release of the boys after AVTAK : Election Day had two 12 inch versions...

Bored, these two are the best: "Art of Noise Mix" by "Peter Fenton" and "12'' Remix" by "Steve Thompson", you can listen to them in bootlegs "ULTRA RARE TRAX" 1994 and "UNLEASHED" 2014.
