I've finally got round to reading Steve Malins' Biography of the band ~ 'Notorious', and he mentions the song 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' which is variously described as either a great lost DD single or 'a bit trite.' I've just downloaded the demo from Klaus' site, and I quite like it ~ it's cool to hear a song from that classic DD era that you've never heard before anyway. You can hear bits of the verse that were later adapted into 'The Seventh Stranger', but I love the chorus!
What do you all think of this song ~ lost classic or a bit naff?
Also is there a clearer version of the demo available? as the one on Klaus' site is a bit muffled.

i like it, but i sometimes still wonder if it is someone pulling our leg ... easy to put together a poppy reggae-ish thing based on more or less the same chord structure as "the 7th stranger" and present it all muffled so it is hard to over-analyze ... the vocals are that old yelpy style that simon used to do, and it may be easy to impersonate ...
that said, i generally tend believe it IS them, and i think it is a fun and interesting song!!! i suppose lots of their songs do undergo big tempo changes, and lyric rewrites. i seem to recall another of their songs (SAP, possibly?) starting out completely different ...

I could never quite get into the song since all the copies I have heard were bad. Never once thought that it wasn't them. Interesting theory.

I thought it was catchy but a bit corny. I can understand why it didn't make the album cut.

I really like the song and the fact that it was inspired by William Blake. Unfortunately, the sound quality on my version is not that great.
