I wasn't in love with the first book, but I liked the second book better than the first, and loved the third one, so I guess this is a series that really grows on you as you understand better what is going on.
Agree that the film sounds v. difficult to make. Palomino, I certainly could be wrong, but I don't think it will matter if the production company is American: the movie studios tend to be left wing, and I think it is fair to say that PLENTY of movies that are made in the US every year offend the religious right. (Although yes, I did hear that some elements of the Da Vinci Code were modified from the book to mollify the Catholid Church.) But here, I doubt they could change the storyline that much anyway, because the anti-religion element is so central to the plot that there would be no story left if you got rid of it! Plus, I doubt Pullman would let them so fundamentally distort his story like that!
PS. Ivy - the Harry Potter books are GREAT to listen to on CD. After I had read them multiple times, somebody turned me on to the audio books. It is amazing the different nuances that you pick up when you are listening rather than reading, and the narrator (what's his name? Jim Dale, I think?) is just so damn good.

vsb - I agree with you completely on all accounts. I almost didn't read/listen to the second and third book because the first one was so difficult to get through. I liked them each better than the previous one.
I listen to the Jim Dale books. I have listened to the ones recorded by Stephen Fry, but I don't like them as much.
