There are so many people to thank after last Saturday that it's taken me this long to get my shit together to do it.
First and foremost (I've already done this privately and in a much more sappy way) - thank you Mark, Carl and Les: Chekhov's Wig as a theory is now more than a year old, and we're coming up on the first anniversary of our first time locking ourselves in a room with nothing but instruments and a vague idea of how we wanted to use them. Mark and Carl's guitar interplay came naturally - some of that was because they've been playing for ages, but some of it is just that the pieces lock together perfectly. Les is as natural a musician as I've ever known, and while he might have been new to the bass, his innate groove makes him by far the best other half of a rhythm section I've ever played with. I guess I had the most to recall - I used to play the drums in bands, but I hadn't actually sat behind a kit in more than a decade. The three guys I shared a stage with on Saturday bring out the best in me as a musician, and I'm so glad to have had this opportunity. If it all ends tomorrow, it will have been worth it.
Thanks to Sheila, Dani, Sophia, Jenna and anyone else who worked so hard to put that night together. I know the people who were there have no idea how much you all went through to make it happen, which is a testament to your determination. Everyone there had a blast, including me.
Thanks to the best crowd I've ever played music for. I've had the pleasure of drumming for a host of other bands. But while some past crowds might have been bigger, none has ever been so much fun. Your enthusiasm made me play better.
Thanks to all the people I met that night. Thanks to old friends and new ones. I tried really hard to talk to everyone, though I realized later I missed a few people. But everyone I talked to was great. At these events, it's almost impossible to feel as though you've spent enough time with anyone. So - Next time, alright?
Thanks to Anthony DeVito, professional stand-up and Duran Duran fan for his hilarious performance of material written specifically for the night.
Thanks to Sarah and to Andy Taylor for their really cool, really eclusive contribution. Thanks to Duran Duran for theirs, and Juicy and Sony and Teajay and Imperia and Piper-Heidsieck and everyone else who contributed goods, services, etc...It made it all really, really cool.
Thanks also to Mark and Carrie - Thanks for giving SBS and Chekhov's Wig a special part of this forum on which to organize, plot, plan and get amped up. It meant a lot to have your support. I only wish you could have been there in person.
If I've forgotten to thank you, I'm sorry. It's all still a blur, and I didn't even drink that night.
