I had a chance years ago to get the whole thing but I was in college and broke so I didn't do it. I have the VHS (somewhere) and it's probably begun the disintegration process, they don't last all that long. I remember some interesting stuff like them taping for a TV show where they are faking along to a backing track but the sax player was going out of his way to play some really atrocious out-of-key stuff. Was that Andy Hamilton then?

Was that Andy Hamilton then? That definitely happened in the Sing Blue Silver '83-'84 tour documentary as well. They were lip-synching Union of the Snake for an Italian TV show, and Hamilton was deliberately playing his fills in the chorus WAY sharp. The band were having to try hard not to laugh to obviously! ;D As for VHS tapes, if you take care of them, they should still be fine. All my official VHS tapes, and almost all of my old recorded tapes still play fine. The ones that don't are because of tracking issues or having been eaten (by the VCR, not me ). Yes, eventually they will degrade, but I haven't noticed that much yet. Of course, that might be partly because they never looked that great to begin with (at least not on our crappy old VCR)!

The unfortunate thing about VHS and age is that tracking can become an issue...usually due to normal wear and tear and depending on how often that occurred due to the amount of play the tape has seen. Owning normal VCR's are fine for playback but owning one with TBC (Time Based Correction) can be a bit more expensive. I have a wonderful Panasonic AG-1980 VCR and it gives me more control than average market-based machines. They make for decent transfers of old VHS. I had always just assumed it was my parents' crappy machine that caused the tracking issue with other VCRs, but what you said makes sense. A machine with more precise and wide ranging controls would be a nice asset for making better transfers!

vhs tapes always play best on the machines that they were recorded on.
that way the tracking isn't really an issue. i have a couple of old sony slv-750hf vhs hi fi decks and they are really nice. some of the best ones sony made! but most of the tapes i have were made on a nice jvc hi fi machine and they don't track properly on the sony no matter what you do. that is just the essence of vhs and tape formats in general.
it's a shame cos i have tons of dd taped from canadian tv. i am sure most of it is on youtube anyway, so at least it will survive some how! but it would be nice to do some good transfers.
derek...
