FFS!
"DURAN Duran yesterday admitted their recent records were so poor their new single is free."
No, it's free because it's Christmas and also because it helps to promote the release of the album. I can appreciate that the band were disappointed with the music on the previous two albums but "The Mirror" have made it look as if the new single is free *because* of that, which just isn't true.

I wish the band wouldn't go into this territory because it feels like pandering to those who are too snobby not to find the good in some of the "bad", because there are some excellent tracks in the last few albums - they're just not solid albums all the way through. That said, I can understand that the band want to say "hey, what we did didn't resonate with the old school die-hards".

Astronaut was a success! they crossed over generations then too! They had two hit singles and a hit album lets not forget. They think they failed with that album in hindsight, but I was there, and I remember the buzz, much bigger buzz than there is so far.
It was a success, but for them maybe not what they thought? They should be happy with what they had back then, it will NEVER be any bigger.

So now Astronaut and RCM "didn't work" and were "mediocre"? Funny, I remember the band claiming at the time they were their best work in years...gotta love that PR!

Didn't Duran Duran have a #1 hit with 'View to a Kill"? That was in 1985, AFTER "Reflex"...

Calling something 'mediocre' means John didn't think the albums were very good. I don't see him offering any qualifiers there, or saying "We loved the work but the public didn't." He's flat out disowning the music, just like they'll disown AYNIN if it doesn't sell. That seems to be the trend.

I'm sure there are many quotes where John has said a few negative things about many of their previous albums. I guess you will always be critical of your own work and convinced you can do better which i assume is one of the reasons they continue. Striving for that perfection. I don't think it necessarily means he dislikes the albums but is just admitting some of their weaknesses.
Personally, the argument that the public didn't like it cos it didn't sell doesn't really wash with me. If a record company is behind you and through enough money and promotion at it, the shitest album in the world will sell well and I think we can all think of many of examples. In the UK, RCM was just ignored by TV, papers and the media in general that i doubt many people outside of the DD fanbase are even aware of its existence.
