Ooo, kel was right! Wow, I wonder why I didn't know this before. That means that there was more equality in the band than I initially thought.

schmacko, have you read the biography about Crowded House - Something so Strong? I read it a few years back. From what I can remember, the book compares the 'family' feeling that there was in Split Enz with the constant tension that used to be in Crowded House, like the Crowdies were always on the brink of a break up. Neil's music writing talents took off with Crowded House. When Tim rejoined for the Woodface album, they worked really well together while the album was being written/recorded. It wasn't until they started to tour that things got strained. Tim was used to being the front man. He wasn't anymore, and this was hard for him to take. It finally came to blows one night after a show. But they are brothers and have recorded an album together since then. Family is very important to these guys. Eddie Raynor (from Split Enz) was also keyboard player for them in the early days, and toured with them on a number of occassions. Very special band, very special songs. I've seen Neil Finn live after his first solo album Try Whistling This. He was fantastic! His eldest son Liam who was about 14 at the time joined him on stage for a few songs - the girls went mad for him and Neil had to do the protective father thing! As we were leaving the venue, I heard someone say behind me "He never looks any older does he?" The reply was "yeah, him and Cliff Richard"!

Yeah, the tension during live performance with Tim not knowing what to do is exactly what was brought out in the documentaries. Funny, it seems everyone felt that way.

The first time I saw Crowded House, Tim Finn was supporting. During his set, the Housies came on to support him. So Crowded House supported Tim Finn who supported Crowded House.
One of the best gigs of my life.

ahhh, crowded house. in my top-three bands of all time. some of the best concerts i have ever been to have featured the amazing neil finn. he puts on a great show and regularly invites audience members to join him on stage either to sing backup or play an instrument. in my eyes, he's a god, not THE god...
schmacko, you brought up some interesting points. i have to see this dvd to comment on it...

kiwifan, I've always wanted to find that book but I haven't seen it anywhere. I'm guessing it was a AU only release. If you ever see a copy around please let me know & I would send you the money for it. Great review Schmacko.

Hi KimK
I actually got the book out of my local library. I'm not aware if it was only for sale in Australia and New Zealand. If I see a copy, I'll let you know!
@madmaxine. A few years back Neil Finn toured New Zealand at the start of the university academic year to coincide with university orientation events. The tour was called "Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce the band" The idea was that local musicians could audition to play with Neil at these gigs. Once chosen, they would have only a day to rehearse with him before the show. A TV documentary was made about it. It was really interesting and the musicians had a blast!
