Is Duran duran doing better then last year are they doing well with the concert/ this is copied from the other thread: This tour should bring Duran back into the spotlight... well this is the 2nd american leg!!! first one didn't do anything regarding the aynin sales.(around 60000 to date in the US) However despite that last year when they came to Texas they came to a small venue in lewisville with standing room only nwhich a big big girl like myself couldnt even go to and yall said the Houston show was the same way that the guys were going to small venues only. However now with them back in Texas theyre playing at verizon theatre big huge venue, with disability seating( yea for me!), so does that mean theyre doing better sense theyre at bigger venues? or because opf Aynin sales like this other statement says theyre not?How is it possible that they got big enough to go to bigger venues if theyre not doing well? doesnt make sense to me?Ill shut up now just asking

They are not doing better than ever but I think they are doing just fine.
The fact that they want to play bigger venues is them taking more risks I guess. And they probably want to limit the number of shows considering the recent fragility of Simon's voice hence the bigger venues.

in 2010/2011 duran duran released the criticaly acclaimed ALL YOU NEED IS NOW cd. the band is very happy with the sound of all you need is now but commercially the album didn't do well. eventually is think it will earn silver status in the UK (for selling more than 60000 units) but in the US i dont think it will surpass RCM sales which are 102.000 units to date unless they have a radio hit single that will boost sales. ... as for the touring... the fist american leg was basicly promotional and thats why the small venues. now the second leg features some mid sized venues and some small theaters/halls. so i dont think they are taking big risks. they know exactely their power in the US. VERIZON theater is not a huge venue. its a 6300 capacity theater. rose garden arena is a huge venue 19800 capacity but they use the theater layout which is 6500. i hope this US leg will sell out and help their current album sell more units.

I always compare them to my other favorite successful synth band Depeche Mode.
Each have their pros and cons. ... On one side Depeche Mode has had their 6 albums since 1990 hit the the top 10 in America. However, they don't seem to be a well known name as Duran Duran when it comes to the media spotlight or singles. ... On the other side, Duran Duran is still a well known name in the spotlight and have had many hit singles, regardless if they are always explained as an 80's band.
Depeche Mode sells albums not singles.
Duran Duran has sold more memorable singles, than albums.
Then let's consider touring. ... I think Depeche Mode wins in this category. ... The command they have with the audience, the masses they play too, and the music they have created over the years that evolve with the times and that can be rocked out in any venue to a happy crowd. Just watch any live version of Enjoy the Silence.
I feel Duran Duran has dropped the ball many times with singles and getting out there with the right message, but I know they always still have the chance to have a successful single and album. They need to stop releasing the songs/ballads with a message and release the songs that can make you move and rock out. Simon always says they are party band, is that what Someone Else Not Me, What Happens Tomorrow, Falling Down or Leave a Light On makes you think of? ... Seriously, DO something with Too bad You're So Beautiful, Being Followed and Girl Panic (got a vid for this one - yay!).
In the end, to answer your subject line, is Duran Duran doing well? ... Hell Yes, they have a career that will last them the rest of their lifetimes ... but they can achieve higher success!! Especially in America, if they do things right. ... Anybody can really.

Yes, I totally agree mystikwolf83. And yes, if they don't release 'Too Bad You're So Beautiful' as a single then they must be stark raving mad. What Nick said about the song before the album's proper release has turned out to be correct: "It will fall into every fan's top five Duran Duran songs of all time". Well, perhaps not *every* fan, but it certainly has done with me. I can't stop playing it and I don't think I ever will.

And that's the thing to bear in mind, just because Too Bad You're So Beautiful is a hit with the fans, doesn't mean it'll be a hit with normal people, the much more casual fan, people who've never heard the band before. There are songs on AYNIN, which only massive fans would appreciate, anyone else it might be wasted on. I'm thinking of The Chauffeur (I know not off AYNIN, but same principle) here, massive fan hit, I love it, but I don't think most people apart from fans, would appreciate how good it is. Overall, Duran Duran are doing well, they're still very significant after over 30 years, not many bands can have that claim to fame. While AYNIN should have done better and could have done better. It was an album for the fans, an apology I see it as, an acknowlegement, that they dropped the ball previously. The fans are crazy for it, I still love it, and that's the main thing for the band.

i think the poster of this thread is asking if duran duran are doing well regarding tour/current album success in 2011 in the US in particular. i think she knows and all of us know that duran have been active for 30 years now and that is something not so many bands can achieve. but the fact remains. AYNIN sales are very poor for such a great album and although many say again and again that this is an album for fans i think it only had an impact saleswise only in hardcore/diehard fans not casual fans or fans that attend duran duran concerts. exactly like astronaut. i mean the attendance for the reunion shows in the UK was 250000 people. but when astro was released it sold only 100.000 in the uk. thats not a bad number of course but proves my point. same think happend in the US. reunion shows were huge but astro sales far less. as for the 2nd US leg we will see if it sells out.
PS too bad you're so beautiful, safe and runway runaway are the songs that have hit potential among general public. so after girl panic they must release one of those.

They should have timed their US tour to coincide with the release of 'Girl Panic'. They could have turned the video and all of its big-name supermodels into an opportunity for big-time publicity BEFORE they tried to sell out these bigger venues. I can see (US) shows like 'Entertainment Tonight' running segments on the 'reunion of the supermodels' video and that will no-doubt help them. Of course maybe they chose to have 'Girl Panic' coincide with their UK/European tour for this reason at the expense of the USA tour(?) I think that if more people could have heard AYNIN, the album could have done better because it is good, but this new video is a master stroke of genius. If this doesn't work, nothing will.

Well not sure how you interpret the difference between casual fan and die hard fan. im not sure id consider msyelf hardcore, because trully I havnt been here for duran Duran all these years. I had a 1 year obsession on them in my late teens had 3 of their tapes and listened to nothing but Duran duran for over a year. But then I left and have just now come back to Duran Duran for the first time.On the other hand ive also harrassed radio stations to play Duran duran as a teen and called myself a Duranie before as a teen so Im not sure Id be comfortable with casual fan either considering that my one year obsession kept me from listening to anyone but Duran Duran.Perhaps iw as a diehard fan for 1 year then dropped out now come back.
However speaking from that perspective,I have to say i have been surprised with how much I love several of the songs from this CD about half cd I like well, including The Man Who Stole A Leopard, i think its beautiful! That song calls to me, its like theyre calling their fans back home or something, the leopard who went back home to this guy in the end after he had gotten older you know thats funny isnt it?
