Hi all,
I'm new here but was wondering what the state of the Duran Duran collector's market is at the moment? Is there still a strong fan base of collectors especially when it comes to vinyl? Has the value of such items increased, stayed steady or fallen away in the last few years?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

i would say that the more rare items, like things you very rarely see on ebay are still getting pretty high prices. things like rare vinyl bootlegs, japanese promo 12 inches, custom cover 7 inches, etc.
but you do tend to see a pattern of price decline that goes like this...
a rare, not often seen item appears on ebay. the first one sold goes for a crazy price. an example of this would be the KHANADA bootleg. one went for over 1000 dollars, the next one went for 600 pounds, then 434 usd, then 210 usd and then 181usd. the one after that went for 280 usd.
so you can see that the first sale results in a total dogfight that goes mental. then as each collector gets one, the competition gets a little less and the price goes down.
but that being said, i think the market overall has softened and items that used to get higher prices have gone down quite a bit. some examples of those items would be : duran goes dutch, (used to go for over 100 dollars, now can be had for 20-25 dollars) arcadia : say the word 12 inch, (used to go for over 100 dollars and now can be had for less than 50 dollars)
i think this comes down to two main things:
1) the not great world economy 2) the fact that items that aren't really super rare get saturation in the market. so if there were 1000 copies of the say the word promo 12 made, there aren't that many collectors who want them that badly, so eventually everyone who wants one gets one and there is still a supply remaining, which causes the price to soften a bit.

Thanks for the reply. Great information. I'm new to collecting Duran Duran vinyl so I appreciate all the information. What in the opinion of forum members would be the top 5 most desirable DD vinyl pressings? What value would you associate with them and how many copies are thought to exist of each pressing? Once again, thank you in advance for any input.

off the top of my head i would say the most rare stuff would be:
7 inches
anyone out there - brazil with nexus pic sleeve careless memories - south africa w custom pic sleeve arcadia - el diablo spain promo w custom pic sleeve a view to a kill - uruguay promo w custom pic sleeve hungry like the wolf - mexico promo w custom b/w pic sleeve and on brown vinyl
12 inches/lp
duran duran story - japan promo album girls on film - colombia green vinyl promo any japanese promo 12 inch with a b&w cover (pe/rio/nmom/uots) lay lady lay - italy 12 inch rio radio special
bootleg vinyl
khanada decadent durantics duranmas duranoid royal rock gala 83
this list doesn't take into account acetates, which are really rare and normally don't come up for sale that often. this is for more common promo and commercially issued items.
and there's plenty more items you could easily sub into that list as being rare, pricey and hard to find.

Once again thank you. Would any of these standard pressings be limited to less than 100 copies?

Once again thank you. Would any of these standard pressings be limited to less than 100 copies? trying to get an idea of how many of a certain item were pressed is always very hard. the record companies tend to not let the info out as it is not in their best interests for the band to know, let alone the public. in the case of acetates, they are normally made for the producer, band and label to hear a mix before it gets pressed. so in most cases there are less than 10 of them made. but as far as promos and commercial pressings, every country is different and it's never easy to find a solid source of info. bootlegs are the same. it's impossible to know how many were pressed unless you talk to the person who pressed them. most of the rare dd boots came from japan, so getting any solid info is very difficult.

Once again thank you. Would any of these standard pressings be limited to less than 100 copies? Welcome Master! You got a bit of very decent info, would you be willing to share some info about your DD collection? What kind of stuff do you collect? Vinyl, cds, memorabilia etc. And do you collect every release worldwide or just specific items/countries? Thanks in advance and best regards, Peter

Hi all and thanks for the welcome. I'm a huge vinyl collector and I do have a reasonable DD collection. I hope to be able to share some of it with the forum in the near future.
