Here is the message I sent to Magus, this was sent before the AVTAK remix discussion but that has been sorted out now . As you can see I covered most of the wishes mentioned by you above :
I read on the Magus site that you work for Duran Duran so I wanted to take this opportunity to ask if you know if there are any plans for a Duran Duran Record Store Day release in 2015? I know that the RSD releases are mostly a marketing device for the big labels (which is somewhat ironic if you ask me) but I was wondering if you, as management, get to make suggestions to Warner for RSD. I thought it was a real shame that there wasn’t a commemorative vinyl issue of The Reflex this year for the 30th anniversary of the song, especially as it was released in the week of RSD in 1984. I would like to make some suggestions if I may be so bold
A View To A Kill on 12”vinyl
Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of A View To A Kill, to date still the only James Bond theme song to become #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. AVTAK never had a commercial release on 12”, making it the only early DD single not to have been issued on this format. There are promo 12”s from the US (quite common) and France (rare) and an elusive German 12” in picture sleeve which I have never seen for real. It would be great to finally get a 12”of the song, the UK die-cut 7” sleeve would be perfect for the picture sleeve (picture enclosed). Maybe even in gatefold sleeve and on white vinyl as a combination of the UK 7”s As the song never got a commercial release on 12” this meant that it was one of those few early songs that didn’t come with the 12” mix for which Duran were famous (Careless Memories and Save A Prayer being the other ones). But…John has told in the past that remixes were commissioned and that he would like to see them released. This would make a RSD release very special for fans and collectors.
The Ahoy May 1987 concert on double vinyl LP
During the 1987 Strange Behaviour Tour Duran Duran played two sold out shows at the Ahoy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. These shows were recorded by Daniel Abraham (who would later co-produce the Big Thing album in 1988). Five songs of these concerts were mixed and issued on a US promo 12” EP entitled Duran Goes Dutch (catchy title . With the release of the Big Thing album the EP was issued as a bonus disc on the Japanese cd release of the album. For a long time these were the only releases where these songs were available. With the re-issue of the Notorious album in 2010 the songs became more widely available. To date these are the best official live recordings of Duran Duran that have been released. No overdubs were used, what we hear is pure Duran Duran. I always wondered why only five songs had been released, some time ago I decided to ask Daniel Abraham if he knew more about what happened to the recordings and if he recorded the whole concerts. Here is his answer:
“Hi Frank
Thank you for your email and your kind comments.
I did indeed record both entire shows, however I only mixed the five songs that were used for the release.
I was really happy how the Ahoy recording turned out and wish an entire show had been released instead. Note that, unlike Arena, the Ahoy show was a 100% live recording, with absolutely no fixes or studio overdubs.
Maybe someday DD will decide to mix the remaining tracks if they can locate the multitrack tapes.
Best,
Daniel”
How cool would it be to let Daniel mix the rest of the show and release it for RSD on double vinyl? Of course there’s the small problem of locating the tapes but that’s why I write you this long before RSD 2015
Medazzaland and Pop Trash on vinyl
In 1997 Duran Duran released Medazzaland, followed in 2000 by Pop Trash. Both albums didn’t fare very well in the charts, Medazzaland was only officially released in a couple of countries (US, Canada, Japan and Brazil I think) as a result of problems with EMI and Pop Trash was released bij Edel Records who really didn’t have a clue how to promote the record. Both albums are however fan favorites. Both albums are also the only DD studio albums not to get a vinyl release. In 2008 the band released the Red Carpet Massacre album on vinyl themselves in a limited run of 2.000 copies on red vinyl. These sold out rather quickly which was a surprise as Red Carpet Massacre didn’t exactly light up the charts.
As we fans always want what we haven’t got and most of us are vinyl collectors we would love to see Medazzaland and Pop Trash get the same treatment as Red Carpet Massacre. Medazzaland would be great for a pink vinyl release and Pop Trash could to with a silver or gold disc pressing. Nick has said in the past that he would love to get these albums out on vinyl some day. I think RSD is THE day for it. I have always understood that the band own the rights to these albums themselves so these could maybe be issued on vinyl without Warner which would make things easier I guess.
Here it is, my suggestions for a 2015 Duran Duran RSD release. Of course I don’t know anything about record company politics and what it takes to get something released for RSD but I thought I’d give it a try.
On October 16th I got this response form Magus:
Hi Frank
Thanks for your notes, apologies for not replaying sooner.
We’ve been looking at various options for a special RSD release and I’ve forwarded your suggested on for consideration.
Thanks so much.
One other interesting thing that probably will not mean a thing but...
when I sent the mail with the suggestions to Magus I also forwarded it to Daniel Abraham. I got this reply from Daniel:
That would be nice.
Thanks for looping me in.
Best,
Daniel
When I got the response from Magus I also forwarded it to Daniel to let him know that my suggestions were read and possibly considered by the management and he never reacted on that. Would it be possible that he is mixing the concert and wasn't allowed to tell... Or maybe he was just getting bored with me, I think that was it but a little bit of me hopes...
Time will tell....
