just listened to it this morning - love this album (although 911 was a bit of a stretch - don't think it conveyed well)

It is not. Have you heard John Lennon's cover album? Only Stand By Me, is any good. Other cover version nightmares are Eurythmics, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, except the ones from their first album, and The Cure.

I remember being at school (5th grade) when I had to find something with rock and rap , coz i was forced to listen to 97.1 hip hop rap stuff at grammar school or i would be harassed for not being hip....but when WHITE LINES came to the radio, I thought it was so damn good it had the "yo yo rap" part and an awesome male singer (simon) who had this sharp voice when singing....I got hooked into thank you.... I thought they wrote the whole album mehhh I was 12 at the time gimme a break!! so when i began to research on "medazzaland " i thought it would be so Rock'ish and amazing but I was wrong

Not everyone is going to like an artist doing their own renditions of another artist(s) work. I think there are far worse albums out there other than Thank You.

Had Thank You been an EP with just the five best songs recorded in a couple of months to tide fans over between The Wedding Album and their next record, then this would have been a non-event. In fact I think a quick covers EP would have still done well commercially, and have proven that the band could rock it and not just rely on ballads like Ordinary World and Come Undone.
However it took way too long for a "gap-record"; by 1995 many people had forgotten how good OW and CU really were. Not only was it a terrible idea for Duran to release a covers album at this time, but then to add insult to injury the band put on stuff like 911 Is A Joke, two versions of I Wanna Take You Higher (come on guys we don't need to hear it twice) and their own Drive By is such a waste of time I'm not going to waste mine by talking about it any longer.
Had the band released Thank You by early '94 at the latest, with White Lines, Lay Lady Lay, Ball Of Confusion, Watching The Detectives, and I Wanna Take You Higher (rock version, which kicks the dance version's arse), and released most of those songs whilst they immediately started recording the follow up to The Wedding Album* for a release in early '95, then history, and Q Magazine, would have been a lot kinder to them.
(* And I'm talking about a REAL follow up to The Wedding Album - Medazzaland was a horrendous successor. Between its terrible sound, horrific rhythm-section, and majority filler, with no classic Duran singles except maybe Out Of My Mind which is still not as good as OW and CU, it's no wonder it tanked).
Instead the band made the worst commercial decision of their careers. Yes, even worse than writing hip-hop dance music with TimberFlake and TimbaBland !!!

I think Ball Of Confusion should have been left well alone, much like the whole idea of doing a covers album. Duran sure know how to kill momentum. After TWA you'd think, OK, this band still has life left. Then after TY perhaps turn off the life support. Some of the songs were actually nice like PD and IWTUH (although purists will say Sly and the Family Stone's version is better). Mr Rhodes once described it as "one of their many attempts at corporate suicide". Which they thankfully said so long to on Meddazaland.

This April 4th will be the 20th anniversary of Thank You!
There's not one Duran Duran album I don't like, and Thank You is no exception. But it's definitely one of my least favourites. White Lines is awesome, Perfect Day is phenomenal, and I also love Watching the Detectives, Success and the title track. The Crystal Ship and Drive By are pretty good, and I've even grown to enjoy 911, even if it's a misconceived choice for a song to cover. Unfortunately the remaining tracks are quite poor: I Wanna Take You Higher (+ Again) and Lay Lady Lay are nothing special, and Ball of Confusion is a farrago of aimless noise.
But it's still a competent effort and far from abysmal. The bigoted clowns at Q Magazine who dubbed Thank You "worst album ever" are exactly that - bigoted clowns. Not only giving a bad impression of Duran Duran's musical talents, but saying that literally every single album that came before Thank You was better than it? No wonder the band decided to pillory Q Magazine in Undergoing Treatment.

There are many songs from Thank You that I really enjoy; and a bonus was to actually see what songs THEY picked.
