I have kept listening to the 8 songs that made my Astronaut to Paper Gods era mix, because I have put that particular mix on quite often. I have also been listening my personal remix of Pressure Off nonstop over the last 24 hours!
I had my Liberty rebirth in August and completely understand where you are coming from there. I used to think it was a subpar album, but now see so much of what I like about The Wedding Album & Medazzaland incubating in that album. I agree with you that for the most part Paper Gods lacks such depth.

I also have not listened to it much. I tried to listen to it for a while when I first got it, and I still continue to "try" to listen to it a little. But I missed hearing traditional sounding guitars (duran guitarists), drums and bass so I've been listening to their earlier works instead. I will say that PG has given me a new appreciation for previous albums I didn't like/listen to as much, so it's not all bad. Perhaps I'll come back to PG later and feel differently. But I don't feel like I will unless my taste in music drastically changes.
@ skinburn: why are you "concerned?" Just curious.

I haven't played PG for about 2 weeks. Listened to it last days and I still have positive feelings about this album: 4/5. To me, PG has similar charm of "Liberty", TWA and Beatles "Revolver" & "Rubber Soul": the joy of making music.

I also haven't listened to it in some time. In part because of other new music, and because the album has a low retention value for return listening. Perhaps my disappointment with it, and the longing for a familiar musical formula, had me going back to older albums. I dabbled with TWA - Love Voodoo never sounded so silky. (As in my earlier post) Medazzaland was finally heard in its entirety. It even made me go back to RCM. Sigh...

I still listen. But its only Paper Gods, Northern Lights, Valentine Stones and Face for Today. And some Evil Beach. The others not so much.
Ive always loved most of Liberty. Even Downtown.

Listened to whole thing on shuffle the other day and it holds up very well. Even weaker songs such Danceophobia and Skyline have their charms now. I was actually taken aback by how much I enjoyed it.
Not as pandering as RCM, more contemporary than Astronaut and more adventurous than AYNIN.
It's sits comfortably in my Top 5 DD albums: Rio Notorious Paper Gods Wedding Album Big Thing

This is a fascinating thread. For what it's worth I see it this way. Like others, I haven't listened to the Paper Gods album for about two weeks now. Instead, I've dug out Red Carpet Massacre, Thank You and So Red The Rose. These are all albums I haven't listened to in full for years. As I was listening, I got to thinking about why I hadn't listened to them for so long and thought: "Wow, there is stuff on here that I had simply forgotten was so damn good!" And then I realised that the Paper Gods effect, for me at least, is that it is such a strong album that it has made me want to rediscover the entire DD catalogue all over again. By the time the UK tour starts (I'm going to four shows) I'll have listened to the band's entire musical career and the final album to be played by me before Manchester, and in the car to each gig, will be Paper Gods. In summary, Paper Gods is such a strong album that it's reminded me how amazing and diverse (a key word for me) Duran Duran music has always been. Then again, Pop Trash is my favourite Duran Duran album (and era) of all time. I may, therefore, be crazy! So sue me. Right now, I'm off to listen to Big Thing.

Concerned for myself because I shouted from the rooftops about the hew album, encouraging nay sayers to persist. My initial judgement has stifled and that surprises me. I can normally play any new album and get an idea if it's going to be any good. However I've lost the flavour a little. I'm sure it'll pass but the album is no way near as good as past glories. Also concerned that the majority of the planet will feel the same way as I do! Lol Ah, I see. I just thought your choice of words was curious. I guess that's my main "concern," if I were to call myself concerned, too. I'm glad people like it and I hope that continues. But for me, burn out came pretty quick with the songs I really do like. I know I'll go back to it and enjoy THOSE songs again. But right now I'm not there.

I like the Paper Gods album. The CD I made is the Deluxe Edition + the US Target tracks. But being that I've played it so much, that I had go and break things up a bit by going back and re-discovering the albums from Notorious to Pop Trash.
