They need to release a single that will grab the public's attention. PO was passable, but I suggest that they release LNITC or Dancephobia - if they were freakin studying the stupid Top 40 while making this album then go release the song that is your contribution to the current Top 40.
Otherwise - let the world tour unfold and make your money from concert goers.

Agreed Skinburn. This practice essentially devalues the charts and can skew public perception.

I couldn't give a hoot about the chart position at this stage....it's all smoke and mirrors....the top 10 position was meaningless in terms of album sales considering the drop off afterwards...but it has given them a good tag line for promotion. The gigs are full of people who know the big early 80s hits and OW CU and possibly sunrise. That's it! I'd love to see more people connecting with Newer stuff so if force feeding is what it takes...open wide! If they can pull more fans from the nostalgia base into the active fan base they'll be well established for DD15. Yeah it's prob adding a few dollars to your ticket esp if you've already several copies, but if you want the band to stay commercially viable, you're a big fan and you can afford the tickets... suck it up.
It's the ticket price with or without an album people are getting screwed on cos they reckon fans are getting on, more financially secure, blah blah. I'm not exactly delighted about this but then again would I be arsed in my late 50 s to do a world tour, make a new album, constantly be ON whether they on stage it not? It'd want to be worth my while! We are all adults, and as emotionally passionate as we all are here they are running a business, and we can all decide at what price point we might disengage.

It's dropped like a bomb because ticket sales have slowed. People get a free album whether they want it or not. This all seems so cheap to me. Well, it is not "free" per say. This craptastic practice contributes to the seemingly never-ending escalation in concert ticket prices. What they actually do is after the band/label/managers/promoters/venues agree on what the cost per ticket will be the label adds a further surcharge (something like $15) to the ticket price to cover the cost of the CD + Shipping. It inevitably is the shittiest version of the album (in this case the 12 track version which I consider unlistenable) and fans have no way to upgrade to the better version of the album. For example you can't select the deluxe version for $5 more on your ticket. This is in large part because these corporate pigs think they are fooling people and that no one actually understands that part of the exorbitant ticket prices is the album that they are paying to get for "free". What a f___king racket! As always, the people getting screwed the most are the fans who have already bought the album and probably bought premium versions of it. So it is more than just cheap. It is a downright underhanded way to force people buying concert ticket to buy the album and fuel inflated chart success. This is part of the reason I very rarely attend concerts anymore.

I really think it's more about building the fanbase than chart position and it's costing WB peanuts to throw the cd in. I'd, (maybe naively) hope that fans aren't being charged full store price for album on top of ticket. the only people talking about DD dipping in and out of the charts are hardcore fans which make up a tiny percentage of the audience, so i sincerely doubt this non-news withering around the lower end of the charts was what they were aiming for. Yes the band owe some loyalty and respect to the fans who stuck with them thru thick and thin but those fans alone won't be enough to keep DD going. The same hardcore fans who will traipse the country to meet their idols and in many cases shell out lots of cash for rare memorabilia, (and hats off to them that's great) yet when it comes to supporting a marketing strategy that might allow for a bit more longevity of the band they'll be bitc*ing and moaning about a few quid.

There is 1 good thing about this strategy...it gets that album in the hands of lazy casual fans. Will they listen to it? Perhaps.
Otherwise, it is a smoke and mirrors tactic as mentioned above plus several other negatives for the hard core fan. As someone who bought several concert tickets for this tour, and in addition to several copies of Paper Gods through the normal channels, I'm very chapped about how the band's handlers are doing business....and they can't even give me a damn single or remix to buy.

I do think a single like Dancephobia and or LNITC should be released closer to the tour--I do want to see some mixes and DANCE MIXES AS DURAN DURAN IS A BAND TO MAKE YOU DANCE--WHERE ARE THE DANCE REMIXES GUYS--Please a proper good video and let's get some steam behind this upcoming US tour!!

Instead of giving a free copy of the album- it might have been cheaper to send ticket goes a code to download a choice of exclusive stuff from the website including tracks form PG - or other material. Thus giving choice to the ticket holder.

But if buyers chooses 'other material' then Paper Gods does not chart....
