The new album Spirit from Depeche Mode is actually more guitar based than Paper Gods...but also a lot of synths of course (since they started out as a pure synth band).
But, the album has no fillers...pure rock'n roll! Gahan at his best vocally:)
They are coming to Europe:)
Recommended folks!

I hope the album is better. Dave sounds great in the studio. Over the last decade or so he sounds a little rough and nasally live though. That won't stop me from seeing them this year, I love them. They are not playing a Boston show. I am going to the Montreal and Connecticut shows. I need a break from New York City, I was there far too much last summer, besides I love Montreal

More real bass..is what they need..not the same using keyboards..I just feel every song sounds the same ...

Is it out already? Went to Spotify and only the new underwhelming single is there. Also bummed they are not coming to Boston. Will have to make due with U2 at Fenway Park.
Love DM but they've been stuck in a serious rut with the past few albums. Here's hoping that Spirit gets them back on track.
Music for the Masses and Violator are their masterpieces for me. I honestly think Violator is one of the greatest albums of all time, regardless of genre.

I pretty much feel the same way, I did love Playing the Angel, but the last 2 albums and the 2 before Angel were good, but not great. I'm excited for this new album based on what I've heard from a few people that have heard it.

Some good songs, but the more I listened to it, the less I liked it. However, I think it's much better than their last album Delta Machine (I hated that one) I loved Playing The Angel and enjoyed most of Sounds Of The Universe. I agree they have been in a bit of a rut for a while now. This new album has a new producer. I'm going to take a break from listening to the leak I have of the new new album and give it another go in a few weeks. I have already preordered it.

Heey Folks,
I've been listening to the new album for a couple of times now and I absolutely love it!! I like both Depeche Mode and Duran Duran and you cannot compare paper gods with spirit.
So here's my short review of the album: Going backwards: Awesome opening track with a very nice rythm going on in the song. One of my two favourite songs. Where's the revolution: I like it a lot, a nice sing-along. On spotify already ofcourse. The worst crime: looks alot like the soulsavers project from Dave. A very nice ballad, but something completely different from the DM sounds you are used to. Scum: not really liking this song, because it has a weird sound to it. But other people might like it alot. You move: another totally different track. It gives me a positive vibe, but I'm struggling to love it. Cover me: Great track!! Really liking this one. Together with Going backwards my favourite songs. It has a very dreamy melody, where you can listen to on a beautiful evening at the beach. Eternal: very strong Martin Gore song. Very short and bare this song. Poison heart: catchy song and nice singalong. So much love: seems like this song is the fan favourite on the DM forums. It has some sort of western touch to it with the guitar riffs (reminds me of personal jesus alot). Poorman: catchy heeeeeey heey tune with some guitars in it. No more: I love this song! I really like the combination of Dave and Martin on this song. Fail: very nice ending by Martin.
Overall I think it's one of their best albums after Ultra. 8/10.

Dude, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode are my fave bands, I'm a huge fan of both.
Spirit SUCKS! It's the worst album of DM, I'm really sad cause a new DM album is always very much welcomed, but Spirit is just noise.
I agree with lavalamp, you cannot compare Paper Gods with Spirit, you just can't compare DD with DM, they've got their own style and soul.

I only think it's interesting that they made an album which doesn't have much obvious single material on it. It may grow on me, but it's a little hard to sit through. I already like it a lot more than Delta Machine and Exciter.
