It's obvious that the majority of keyboards aren't played live, but I think it's not as bad as some people say. If all of the keyboards were just samples, there wouldn't be mistakes as this one in the intro Also, what's worth some attention is this very part of RCM making of-

On "piano-heavy" Duran albums like Liberty, there's "additional keyboards" credits being handed out... well in this regard Nick is ahead of his time as DJ/EDM producers today can hardly put together a triad on their own... you just have to be able to draw in notes in a DAW's piano-roll. But we're never going to see Nick Rhodes seated on the cover of an album at a grand piano wearing a tux doing piano versions a la Benny Andersson from ABBA, for instance. I cannot believe after being in music all these years he just somehow hasn't managed to pick up a lot of the basics...? Bowie was competent enough on piano that he played keys for Iggy Pop on tour, no? Or was it Lou Reed? yeah, it was Iggy... link

Nile Rodgers is on video (I wanna say it's on the MTV Special Notorious: The Return of Duran Duran) saying, and I quote, that between the years he'd worked with the band on Wild Boys ('84) and Notorious ('86), "Simon had become a better singer, John had become a better bass player, and Nick had become a hell of a lot better piano player". It pisses me off that I can't remember where for sure, or find it on the Youtubes, but he absolutely said it. I've always been able to hear it in my head, and I actually saw it again at some point in the last year or two. Maybe it was Behind the Music? I don't think so, but... Anyway, I'll trust Nile's judgement. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely do believe that, for whatever reason, Nick often does mime onstage, but the man for sure knows which keys make which chords and he definitely knows how to play better than he lets on. No virtuoso, but functional. He just prefers being a sound alchemist, coming up with great sounds and then triggering them live with one finger!

You are correct, Nile said that exact quote on the 1986 Return of Duran Duran Special on MTV. See 1:06:

See 1:06: Thanx champ I was certain Nile had mentioned that also was looking for its source, I was pretty sure it is in Daryl Easlea's book "CHIC & the Politics of Disco (but have yet to find it). You found it instantly, good for you !

How fast is Tom Brady? How high could Larry Bird jump? People always question or point out a weakness in someone that has a gift for something.

I'm no competent keyboard player by any means, but I can do relatively simple things like play major and minor chords or program something on a recording program if need be. I'd have a really hard time imagining that Nick isn't eons and eons beyond that sort of thing after hanging out in studios for 35+ years. Whether or not he just presses one button at a time live doesn't really doesn't factor into his competency there.

Way way back I remember an interview where he mentioned that he didn't like playing live so much.(in the 80's) I think he has automated as much as possible and primarily plays simple parts live....triggers etc.
When they did Make Me Smile, he didn't play piano on that song live either... There is a video out there.

Sorry I've been off here a while... No internet at home tends to make things a little difficult. Anywoo...
Some of you were probably wondering when I was going to chime in here. Nick can play basic piano...nothing spectacular. He knows chords and can play them. Whether that be mainly in studio, who cares. Duran Duran has a lot of synth work in them, as many have said. I don't see how every single keyboard part could be played live anyway. I've watched him and he does do some playing but most are just triggers. Does that bother me? Hell no. I love the phrase someone used here: sound alchemist. Not much more to add because so many people have said what I've already felt. However what I do dislike when other instruments play the keyboard "parts"...or play the same notes and much louder so it drowns out the synth all together. Nick makes amazing soundscapes so when another instrument drowns it out, it kind of ruins the song.
