Didn't the guys say that the "true" 40th anniversary will be in 2020? (40 years after Simon joined) In one of the 'Katy Kafes' Simon said that he didn't consider it officially DD until he joined...despite wearing the 1978 T-Shirt...

There's so many potential 40ths it can take care of Durantime. Perhaps it is just now when the name dropped, maybe it is next year on the anniversary of their first gig. Maybe it is in 2020 on the anniversary of SLB joining, thus completing the first line up to make a release. Maybe it is later on in 2020 on the anniversary of when the Fab Five had their first gig. Or even in 2021, 40 years after Planet Earth was unleashed on the world.

Very very impressed Ansgar. We will have our own celebrations. Bollocks to DDHQ. I’m equally impressed...such detail!! To be fair to HQ though John, they did tweet the Barbarella / band name decision info on the 50th anniversary of the release of the movie: i was actually a little surprised that they'd remembered to do it - as the research & scans were done in May last year.
(there was the full front page & the review for the film done as well)
Well, from what was said, John believed he'd seen the film on TV on a Monday in late 77-early 78 - which was why there was an effort to get the info ahead of his recollection of when that anniversary would be...
...& so along with fixing the date & getting hold of the issue of the Radio Times, i also spent a bit of time researching to demonstrate that he couldn't have done - due to the way the licensing for films worked in the UK at the time & the other air dates in the following couple of years.
Yeah, it was just a one off thing that i was asked if i could help with.

Knowing DD, it could be Febuary 2021 ?
40 years to the day when they officially released thier first ever audio offering (PE) to the world ?
Thereby members who initially officially released DD music for purchase would be involved. (All but Andy unless of course he returns).
It's possible that " IF " they had already done something spectacular for the 1978 - 2018 anniversary, certain ex members such as Andy W and S Duffy could think that's crazy/nuts when SLB/RT/AT weren't even in DD?
Can you imagine the current DD being interviewed and asked,
"Now it's your 40 years anniversary DD, however three of the original members aren't exactly 40 years in the band" (then interviewer asks) "Who were the others that left and why?"
It kinda heaps defeats the celebration I suppose
Dunno, I'm just throwing it out there !
Considering DD haven't announced anything already, it's likely it could be 1981 - 2021 OMG HEAVEN FORBID !
Who knows ?

The 40th anniversary has officially begun it’s just not forthright and center of attention. They hastagged it in tweets for the BBC specials, the band/management has “endorsed”/ promoted the Classic Pop specials, and the perfumes are also part of the 40th celebrations. I think they will make a bigger deal of it next year and probably 2020 (with the official “Simon” anniversary). Based on what John said, they are planning 40 “special” things or events. The perfumes were one of the 40.

Love this song. Anyway getting back to the 40th Anniversary 'specials' I'm getting to the stage where I'm beyond caring, and I wish I didn't feel like that, but when tour dates are announced and yet again it's just the USA who seem to benefit, anyway rant over, apologies, it must be my age........

I can see the interviews getting a little awkward with the technicalities. Since the band had such a complicated roster in the beginning with so many different people come in and out of the group, it's probably easier for everyone to hold off until 2020/21 just to make it simpler. But I personally like the idea that the band was "born" the moment Nick and Nigel watched Barbarella and decided on the name! And thank you, ansgar, for putting all that together! Fantastic!

I think this thread will be popular for a while. Therefore can I suggest that it be moved to the DD40 section? It feels very cold over there at the moment. Do you know of the old Klingon proverb, “Revenge is a dish best served cold? It is very cold...in space.” - Khan, from Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan, celebrating (without debate or confusion) its 40th anniversary in 1982!
