gosh, so many people get dui's. who really cares? lol. it is not a big deal. another reason people hate the press in this country today for being bloodthirsty, unethical vultures, out to smear people for any little thing. tell that to this family!!!! You just confirmed how ignorant you are.Drunk driver kills mother, injures 3-year-old sonA young mother is dead and her child critically injured after they were run down on a sidewalk in Scarborough on Wednesday.
The van driver has now been charged with several offences, including impaired driving causing death.
Det. Paul Lobsinger from the Toronto Police Service, holding a small running shoe, crumpled hat and torn kite belonging to a three-year old victim of a suspected drunk driver, spoke to reporters Thursday.
The child, whose name has not been released and his 36-year-old mother, Yan Zhang, were walking home along McCowan near Eglinton after going out to fly a kite, when a van mounted the sidewalk and struck them, killing the mother at the scene.
"They were walking on the west sidewalk. The vehicle was southbound. It struck the curb and then mounted the curb where it came into contact with the two pedestrians," confirmed Toronto police Sgt. James Cassells.
The boy was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children, where he remains in critical condition.
The motorist, 56-year-old Dragan Gorgijevski, appeared in court Thursday to face charges of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm. His next court appearance is on Monday.
Residents of the area were angry to hear that a drunk driver was responsible.
"It's awful, just awful," said one woman, who continued that the situation was "ridiculous, not worth it ... call a cab," one resident said.
The incident has brought the issue of drunk driving back into the spotlight, leaving many drivers in Toronto and across Ontario shaking their heads at a completely preventable tragedy.
OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley has been patrolling Ontario's roads for 29 years. When it comes to drunk drivers, he's seen it all.
"Sometimes, they're so drunk they'll stop in the passing lane, I've had them crash into the police car, or just not even notice us. They're just a huge danger," said Woolley.
According to Woolley, police are doing their best to curb the problem of drunk drivers, and have bade some progress. But, he noted that police always need the help of other drivers.
"A lot of people at crashes later say, 'I knew he was going to hurt somebody, I knew he was going to crash,'" Woolley said.
Police are urging anyone who thinks they see someone driving drunk to call 911.680news.com/news/local/article.jsp?content=20070712_073816_2876

Driving drunk IS" A BIG DEAL"! Three of my classmates were killed, two their senior year, by drunk drivers. My brother, who's a cop, has been hit TWICE by a drunk driver. Both times he was going to a call, lights and sirens on. One guy hit him so hard, you could read some of the lettering off the tire imprint on my brothers hood. Both of the drunks had their "second chance", their third chance, one was on his fifth chance. I was the one to get the police knock on the door, to tell me my brother was hurt, in the hospital, and needed me there. My family and I are so glad that he's okay, but he is no longer on patrol,( a job he loved and had wanted to do since he was five)he now teaches at the academy. I hope you and your family never get that knock natoriousphantom, it's damn scary and gut wrenching.

I do think drunk driving is a terrible, horrible thing. I would never do it -- don't even have to worry about it since I refuse to take even a sip of alcohol (never have) -- but I do not think it is good practice to treat celebrities differently than normal people. I was making a generalization more than talking about this specifically. It seems like the press looks for any little screw up to smear even someone semi-famous...it is that sickening tabloid mentality that consumes the press/media of this country that I was complaining about. I do think drunk driving is a serious offense...I just hate to see things blown out of proportion. I would rather the press devote time to more serious matters -- like ACTUAL people who get KILLED / HURT from drunk driving...or people who die in wars!! There is a lot worse stuff going on than one celebrity getting pulled over for a dui...care to guess how many of those there are each year? How abuot articles about people who actually die from drunk driving? I am sure there must be at least one of those pretty much every day somewhere in this country.
I am sorry if I am for more responsible journalism. I am sick of tabloid sensationalism/fluff.

They didn't report on him going out, in public, without underwear. They didn't report on him falling down some stairs. They reported him for DUI. It isn't a " little thing".

Celebrity run ins with the law are going to get reported simply because they are celebrities. Good thing too, shows people that A) yes, they are human after all and B) they are not above the law. You would think that the embarrassment this should cause would be a deterrent, not to mention the potential damage they're doing to their careers. It does seem like these days though, you're no one unless you have at least 2 DUI's. Way to set an example for the kids, people. I agree though, more attention should be focused on the victims of drunk driving, and how it can devastate people's lives. But after spending this past year watching one professional athlete try to salvage his career and public image after some DUI's, that as much as anything else is a good chance to teach young people why they should think twice about the choices they make.

I don't watch the show but driving drunk is a big deal. I'm getting tired of people saying "it's just a DUI".

Regular people who get DUIs ARE reported in the newspaper. It's called "Police Blotter."
Roloff was NOT treated any differently than a normal person with a DUI.
