VOS is a great song. Shame that the song didn't become a big hit.

Bet these got beat violence by a mile!!!! Plus, I heard Simon or Nick say they were the first to use models with fake blonde wigs and video was pretty cool... nypost.com/2016/11/04/these-are-the-20-worst-songs-of-all-time-according-to-our-readers/I mean we did get Serious from this album and it eventually lead to TWA!!

O yes, Imagine would make my worst top 5 too, together with the full Beatles backcatalogue, but nothing wrong with Starship and USA for Africa. I do like Bananarama’s version of Help though. VoS is a song the band must detest too, as it is the only single they never played live. Let’s hope they keep it that way 🙂 Both the song and the video caused me to stop being a fan and me selling all my Duran stuff I collected over the years 1986-1989. Had to buy everything back though after the reunion happened 😄

Love Violence of Summer. And at least half of Liberty too. More songs I skip on the way overrated Wedding Album than I do on Liberty...

Radio 1 didn’t playlist it. At the time that was all there was essentially to make or break a single in the UK.
Phil Schofield had the band on for an extended interview on the Sunday that the chart position was announced by which time it was too late.
But at least it still scraped the top 20 unlike Serious which for me was a superior track but stalled at 48.
So many missed opportunities in their career, hard to know if it was poor pluggers or something at EMI that was stopping them get the exposure they deserved, probably didn’t help that they didnt want to tour Liberty, esp after the momentum there’d gained as a live act during the previous 2 records..

The song is "ok" to me. I do find that chorus lyric incredibly awkward: "The Violence of Summer/A love's taking over". I always felt the song was them trying to cash in on the "Love Shack" sound, even using the lyric "sugar shack".
Overall I find the album close to the bottom for me. There are a few songs that I marginally like, like Liberty, My Antartica, All Along the Water and Downtown. And of course, I think Serious is great. But I really don't like the rest of the songs. I wouldn't go as far as to say they're bad--I just simply don't like them much. It felt like they were trying too hard to emulate trends, and trying on new and different styles of music that didn't really suit them at all, and it felt awkward and unnatural. Also, I was finding Simon's voice more grating as he continued to favor a higher, more nasal performance with minimal layering.
I remember how excited I was to learn about a new DD album coming out! I was in my senior year of high school, and I thought having a new DD album as my soundtrack to my last year of school was a gift from the heavens! My sister was studying abroad that summer and came home with the 12" mixes for VOS. I remember once the album (CD) came out, we were really trying to savor the experience by reading the list of songs and writing down what we thought each song was going to be like (ballad, dance, mid-tempo, brassy, etc.). I think we were wrong about most of them! It was also exciting to hear that they were officially a 5 piece band again, which made my expectations higher.
Anyway, I did try to like the album, and for a long time I was in kind of a denial about it, not being honest with myself about how I really felt. However, in perspective, there was only a pool of 6 total albums of theirs, so I wanted to treasure everything I had of theirs. However, I was realistic enough to admit that I didn't like Hothead! After a year or so, I found myself listening to the album much less. Also, seeing how poorly it was doing with the general public was also a bit disheartening. No tour either. I never saw the video for Serious til much later. Then it seemed like they dropped off the face of the earth! Having this album that I honestly didn't like as much as the previous albums started to feel like my love and enthusiasm for DD was fading. It was the beginning of a steady decline in my enjoyment of their music, which started with half the songs on Big Thing.
And it was. TWA was even worse for me, although I went through that initial denial stage and forcing myself to listen to every song on it hoping it was a "grower". Thank You was terrible for me, no denial there. I think I only listened to it once. Medazzaland was a nice surprise for me and I still think it's a great album. But then Pop Trash was a disappointment again, especially after Medazzaland and thinking they had finally turned a corner. Even Astronaut was disappointing to me. And RCM. It wasn't until AYNIN that I finally regained my enthusiasm for them. And I think PG is great as well (though not as good as AYNIN), so I'm really hoping they can keep up this momentum!
Anyway, sorry for the long post!
