As the 2010 Notorious re-issue is spinning nicely on the turntable I was wondering how you all began collecting? What was the moment the transition from "just" being a fan into a collector began for you? And how did you start collecting? And would you like to share this?
I will kick off of course
I became aware of DD in 1983 when Dutch radio station Veronica made Is There Something I Should Know? "Alarmschijf", which meant they highlighted the song and it got more airplay than other singles. After that came the SATRT singles and The Wild Boys, leading to me buying Arena on tape. My first DD album. Of course I bought or got the other albums soon afterwards and bougt all the new albums on tape from that day on.
When I got a parttime job in a supermarket in the spring of 1991 a co-worker was also a fan of DD. We got to talk and he told me he had a lot of DD vinyl, mostly 12"s. As I had always bought all my music on cassettes till that point I was completely unaware that there were things like B-sides and 12" mixes. I had never even looked at a DD single in the shops before, assuming that all the songs where on the albums. That first evening at my friends house I heard more "new" DD music than all the years before that...
That was the moment that I decided two things:
1: I would spent some of my hard earned money on a stereo set with turntable;
2: I wanted a 12" from each DD single to get all the B-sides and mixes.
My friend went to record fairs (these were the pre-Ebay days off course) and asked if I was interested in coming along. The first one we attended together was a fairly big one at the Jaap Eden Hall in Amsterdam. I can't remember what I bought that first time but it where at least a couple of 12"s. Lots of fairs followed, as did trips to London where some serious record hunting was done.
At the record fairs I learned about promo singles and that they contained unreleased mixes. So there was more to discover than just the commercial releases. The goal became to have DD's music as complete as possible. When I reached the point that I almost had (promo) 12"s of most singles I began to look at 7's, by now I had a deep love of vinyl, so I began collecting those as well. Soon after vinyl albums also came into focus. All the time also buying cd's and cd singles.
When internet really took off I discovered websites form fellow collectors, especially Guillermo Ugarte's site. This site became my visual bible and here I learned about different issues of various releases, giving yet a new impulse to my collecting and also giving me the inspiration to eventually (years later) making my own little website. Collecting now is done mainly through Ebay but I never can resist walking into a record shop when coming across one. New releases, RSD issues and re-issues I always buy at a local record store who have been the to go to place for all things Duran for more than 30 years for me now. I was planning to visit the huge record fair in Utrecht this April for the first time in years but due to the Corona virus that was cancelled. But the next time it is held I will go.
I am a selective collector, not a completist. I only collect the release that feature different tracks or artwork, I don't want everything. As much as I love to see these large collections, it's just not for me.
O, and that guy that turned me onto collecting in 1991 is still my best friend today
