After 27 years I’m ecstatic to announce that my interview with Simon from ‘93 now has a place it can call home! I’ve now added it to my website. There is a written feature with some of the answers and at the end there is a link to listen to the whole interview on Soundcloud, where you’ll find additional material. The audio is original and untouched since my days at college. But it’s part of my work at the time and helped me pass my exams. One day I may revisit it but not right now. It was fun doing it and I hope you enjoy it! duranduranrocks.com/interview-simon-le-bon/

Great read, it was such an amazing time. I was a sophmore in college when Liberty came out, I was a hardcore Duran fan and had been since I was 13 or so. But I didn't even know the album came out. A friend saw my CD collection and said hey I saw a new Duran album at the store. I though he meant 'Decade', two weeks later at the record store there it was - in a long cardboard box format (remember those for CDs?). I couldn't believe it, how did I miss this? Bought and gave it a listen, I remember thinking it was more like a 'band' album than Big Thing, some of the themes from that album were still present. Honestly, I wasn't impressed. A few songs were good, but I remember thinking this isn't a good record. Played it for a few people in the dorm and it didn't go over well lol.. so that was it. I shelved it after 2 or 3 listens and moved on. Circle round to winter 1993. Still loved DD, but thought they were done. Remember, we had no internet, no twitter, there were no magazines running interviews. There was no information source concerning DD other than rumors in record stores lol. I was on break in NYC, buying a new pair of docs in Greenwich Village when the radio announcer said this is the new DD song, 'Ordinary World'. I stood there, dumbfounded, amazed and blown away on my first listen. I'll admit - when I heard the guitar I thought for sure Andy was back. How could the line up that made Liberty produce this masterpiece? I ran down the street to Record Runner on Jones Street, which at the time (and still) is a DD record hub. I asked the guy there about and he said yep, new album coming song is amazing! Couldn't believe it. Now again, I had no idea who was in this band. I didn't know until I bought the Wedding Album and read the linear notes. I was surprised WC was in the band, and that's where he really got on my radar. Honestly, he was invisible basically on Notorious, Big Thing, and Liberty didn't matter. All of a sudden he was front and center - which obviously was a good thing. The Wedding Album itself, is actually not a great record. It has some great songs (TMI, OW, CU, Sin of the City, Breath After Breath, None of the Above) and some truly awful songs (Drowning Man, Shotgun, UMF, Who it May Concern)... but they nailed it with OW, CU, and TMI. I always felt 'None of the Above' could've been a 4th 'official' single. My memory is there was 'hope' again for DD, they were on top, I saw them 3x on that tour, met them at a record signing.. it was the second great time to be a DD fan. The next time I felt that excitement again was the Reunion, and that was lost once 'Astronaut' came out. Felt it again with 'All You Need is Now'... I'm starting to feel it again for the 5th time

Once I wrapped my head around the page formatting I really enjoyed this interview. Nice job. I was only a casual DD fan before TWA was released and, in fact, it was my job as a music reviewer for my school newspaper that got me hooked. Capitol Records sent me a list of upcoming releases and offered to send me a promo copy of any album on the list. I selected TWA. They sent it to me and I practically wore out the cassette tape before the official release date. I then became obsessed with finding the non-album tracks from TWA (Falling Angel is my favorite, but you can guess which song title stuck with me) which then led me to dig deeper into DD's past. I stayed in touch with my contact at Capitol who sent promo copies for Thank You and Medazzaland ahead of those releases as well...

I want others to do the same but I fear that members won’t say anything as they want to avoid any retaliation from a defensive owner of a website and somebody who can fire off occasionally. I know I can come across as been an ass but it’s just passion. I am really an easy going person. If I don’t know of any problems then I can’t fix things. I am trying to make sure that my site is responsive for mobile as my visitors are 50/50 mobile / desktop. I probably spend half my time editing work and design so people can click on links and menus with ease. You can never have enough menus! Lol I use google analytics (which is free and totally brilliant) to gauge audience and how long they hang around the site. Please provide feedback, whether good or bad, as long as it’s constructive. I can’t check every single device and I can’t change things if it’s just one user getting problems and not others. Stop Dead.. how do you mean formatting? Are you referring to the columns and then working to the right? And what were you using to view? Mobile or desktop? If it’s desktop I am trying to make it flow better on mobile by doing that. Let me know please. Thanks

I got sent a load of stuff by EMI when I was doing the fanzine. All the Wedding Album and Thankyou gear. I still bought the singles and albums though as I felt guilty and wanted to help the cause! Haha

Skinburn...I sense your passion--in a good way. I'm a huge fan of feedback and constructive criticism so please don't ever think I'm trying to be negative. I'm referring to the columns, yes. I read it on my MacBook and scrolling down then back up it wasn't intuitive. One column would be easier. I'm not sure what software you use for your web design but Wordpress templates are user friendly and mobile responsive.

I'm not sure what software you use for your web design but Wordpress templates are user friendly and mobile responsive. Thanks.. none taken. It’s in my interest to have a good as site as i can.. within my capabilities. I’m not html skilled. Very basic. So I use elementor on wordpress. Self taught. I really struggled with creating posts let alone anything else! Lol. I think it took me 6 weeks to fully grasp it. As for the columns, yes, I understand you totally. I considered one column but then I wanted it to look a bit more interesting to look at. So I used middle sections for quote headers to divide it. There’s also signal arrows. ‘Turn right here’ so it should be fairly easy to negotiate. The arrows are switched off for mobile - so nobody drives into a wall. Future articles in this vein will use the same format to avoid confusion. I imagine the site will be viewed by the same people so I think it will work ok. I’m also making sure text is nice, big and spacious and also an easy font to read. Light backgrounds as well. I have even added alt text to the photos for people with very poor vision. You never know who is reading! Overall it looks clean. I didn’t want it to be too busy. I have taken note of your point and will always have an open mind for the future. For now its been hard work to get to where I am. Lol
