Oh my God Skinburn - you're right! Think of the following lines of the song:
1) Hey pick it up, this will get you out of your head - straight away they're warning you about picking up Covid-19. Your head will be stuffy, you will be coughing madly, and you'll be out of your head. 2) Sweet sayin' boy, baby I could lick you any time - This is obviously a ploy by the Chinese to spread Covid as quickly as possible. After all - who could resist getting licked by a beautiful Chinese woman? I normally, I mean a friend of mine normally, has to pay big dollars for that. 3) It starts with desire, ends up under cover - Firstly you get licked by a virus-laden individual. And then you end up bedridden, under the covers, for a couple of weeks. 4) Slow death is on the way - They finally admit it - no subtlety there whatsoever
After analysing those lyrics it is obvious - Duran Duran have a time machine. Why oh why weren't we smart enough to decipher these lyrics thirty years ago???

I love Violence of Summer, but to this day I still have no clue what that song is about!! It’s my anthem for the Summer of 2020. It’s about the destruction, chaos, havoc, fallout and violence left in the wake of Coronavirus. It’s about sending the shit back to China (China, na China, na, na, na) with love. LOL! Love it! The ‘Ran had a crystal ball (before they got a ship). Or maybe it was all that hash oil John was smoking!

My Antarctica is one of Simon's best Yeah, I think he shines with ballady, sweeping type songs. I especially love DYBIS? If there is the most unlikeliest of DD songs that’s it. Probably because it originates from a bluesy track, as Taylorism pointed out with the court case. My fave off Liberty!

Agree Re DYBIS, SLB made the likes of Morrisey sound lame IMO At the time and still to this day, I am so proud of SLBs vocal on DYBIS

I remember when I first heard that the LP was to be called Liberty & the first track The Violence Of Summer, I thought Ohh no, DD have gone all political on us in a similar manner to the likes of U2 etc
Before the LPs release I visited an independent music store enquiring if they had the single & preferably the 12 inch. To my surprise the guy said "yes we have it, I'll go get it, it's just come in". He meant the actual LP. It was so special to be expecting to buy the single yet the LP is offered to me instead. He said he hadn't listened to it yet but was happy to sell it to me. I felt like a kid in a candy store.
What a relief it was that DD hadn't gone political and that the LP was pure blissful organic pop. After listening to it, I thought what an expensive LP this must have been to create, like every instrument is evident with total clarity, like the sound awfully crisp I mean. I thought WCs guitar work was so great in all its electronic wizardry. Like even as certain songs end, you'll hear it in all it's interesting innovative presence eg on "all along the water" and First Impressions just to name two & in many instances throughout the LP WCs guitar is quite mesmerising IMO.
I see the LP as a hidden gem considering it's not a well known (by the general public) DD LP. Highlights for me are pretty much throughout the whole LP except for Read My Lips where SLBs vocal is over dramatised and the track Downtown, however depending on my mood the latter can work well, at times I love it's experimentalism. It was the early stages of grunge after-all.
I love the VOS verse yet the chorus is weak. Serious is a great contemporary track which as a single I thought would work with the general public yet didn't. It has a Police type feel IMO. & I admit First Impressions was the grower for me. Even "all along the water" which isn't the strongest track, when I hear JTs baseline in the middle 8, how can it not make a Duranie proud let alone it's SLBs lyric. Similarly the Hothead middle 8 is typical DD while beautiful in essence and both these middle 8's are to a. Extent essential and typical of DD IMO.
My favourite are Can you deal with it - love it's lyric from psychological perspective Liberty - classic DD, love the line "touch me girl, sort me out" My Antarctica (the Throb version too, it's "sonic sensual-ism" at its best) All Along The Water - because SCs drumming is perfection & Venice Drowning (speaking of which I'll elaborate on considering it seems to "sometimes" get a bad wrap)
The song attains some heat or is it hotness? Can I say that on this board or is it too racy? Too late I've said it, lol
It's verges on the rock-ish type DD, with WCs frenzy like guitar complimenting & speaking to SCs smash, bash n drumming crash. WCs frenzy type guitar reminiscent of Andy's on GOF but just a little more raunchy n raw. The song is sexy, erotic, goth like and trance like with a Gregorian chant included. Sometimes by the songs end I feel a sense of numbness. There's a reaction right there and trust me, sometimes in this life, it's great to get away.
"How to be the perfect stranger, The perfect lover, Wanting And as you'll discover, Giving, And as you'll discover........Being" sings SLB
Personally, it's an aim of mine to "give" as I seek to be that perfect lover including "being one" Truth be known my philosophy is that I strive to be brilliant & struggle to be good, but then as humans we are real & hence imperfect aren't we? (& yes it's true, as a happily married man, I prefer to be termed a lover rather than a husband). It just sounds suited & more appropriate IMO.
Therefore, There is no way in hell that I cannot relate to this song, I see it as a message and it absolutely speaks to me.
In addition, When I hear that woman's sexy voice in all its soft whispering "Italiano" dialogue, OMG, Like WOW !
Ever had an intended or person of particular interest, whispering sweet nothings (or simply somethings?), in ya ear?............it feels GREAT doesn't it !!! TBH, I live for such moments.
"Come swim into my love, Come swim into my life"
OMG this lyric has been known to result in me eyes watering including goose bump formation beginning to occur and this is due and simply created by a song, talk about chemistry.
How can it then not be a spiritual thing YET............it is a song too!
And Simons climatic vocal is so perfectly well expressed as it begins what I consider the songs "trance like" ending part, I could listen that particular reverberating ending and WCs guitar treatments for hours.
It's all about atmosphere & feel thing for me and sadly, I must admit, such songs are becoming awfully rare.
Anyway I ain't trying to influence anyone who isn't fond of Venice Drowning or the Liberty LP (you don't have to be). I'm just simply describing how I process this particular song including LP and how my particular soul "unwillingly" responds to it.
That's all it is...........my souls opinion !
Gotta go, it's time to "mesmerise in the candle flame" now Well actually "mesmerise in the fire place's flames", it's actually freezing down under !
Where's my Glayva bottle?

Wow, I can't believe Spin (or any music mag) would suggest that Liberty get an anniversary reissue. Not that I'm against it. It just basically sank without a trace in 1990 and is not known by anyone outside of the fanbase. I got into DD at a strange point in the timeline - between Liberty and TWA. TWA had not been announced yet and I was slowly picking up their 80's output. I actually thought they had broken up. Then one day I was in a music shop that was going out of business. All the CDs were half price and I was scanning the D section. I came across Liberty (with the longbox!) and didn't know what the hell it was. I didn't recognize everyone on the cover and the lower-case spelling of duranduran. It was odd. I bought it. When I got home I threw it on and flipped through the booklet. I was perplexed by the music that sounded nothing like earlier DD and who were these extra dudes and ladies and why are they hanging out at an amusement park? But I left it in the CD carousel (remember those?) and kept playing it and I started to really dig it. Eventually OW was released and the rest is history. But my DD fandom for the 90's was sealed, for better (and sometimes) worse.

Great to see Liberty getting some much deserved praise. Personally I absolutely love it. It’s a great big exuberant pop record full of great tunes. Faves being VOS, the title track (should have been the first single), First Impression (should have been the second single), Venice Drowning (classic DD), Can You Deal With It (total banger) and (naturally) My Antarctica - which is hands down one of the best things they’ve ever written.
Just ditch Hothead, AATW and Read My Lips and replace with some of the superior demos (like Worth Waiting For).
