Thank you! Phenomenal interview that sheds so much light on that turbulent period.
Now someone get Nate Hills on the phone for a similar interview about Red Carpet Massacre!

I really enjoyed that interview.
I liked Liberty at the time because Big Thing didn't seem like a record by a band - more a duo or electronic solo artist - whereas Liberty seemed to be more like a real album. That said, I thought Violence of Summer, although good, didn't sound like them. Warrens sound in particular was very suppressed on that record.

That was a great interview, good to get such an insight into what was a very difficult album.

I am glad that Chris thinks Liberty the song is good. I agree. Liberty, Serious, and My Antarctica are all really good songs. The whole album plays well for me though. Even Duran Duran's misses are still pretty darn good and better than most.

Well it’s clear from this interview that if CK has not been approached to work on remastering Liberty, we won’t be seeing any kind of box set of album reissues for DD40. I think the only way this album will ever be “touched up” is if it is bundled with the better selling ones – something like a box set of the EMI/Capitol years. Yet another missed opportunity to satisfy the fans’ bent up demand for physical product. And to the naysayers I say there IS a profitable market out there for physical product. Just look at the announcement of a new 9 disc box set of post-1990 Dead or Alive albums + remixes. I’m sure the label is not releasing it to intentionally lose money. I would think that the DD fan base is a bit larger than the one for DoA (no disrespect intended to any DoA fans.)

Who would have thought Nick had issues with the color brown...lol
I agree Serious should have been released first!
SDE: So Nick went off to a different studio and…
Chris Kimsey: … And then he brings it all back, and we put it back in, yeah. He had a partner called John Jones and they were almost tied at the hip, but on this album there wasn’t the time, so Nick was having to compromise. I didn’t want to say, ‘sorry mate, you’ve only got 10 minutes’ so that’s why I suggested he went to the cheaper studio. And Nick called me up and said, ‘Mr. K, I love you, but the studio has brown carpet’. He hates brown. He hates anything beige or brown. I said, ‘well, maybe you’ll get it done quicker then!’ [laughs]. Love him to bits.

I would think that the DD fan base is a bit larger than the one for DoA (no disrespect intended to any DoA fans.) A good example is Tears For Fears’ Sowing the Seeds. Ok, it’ll be 31 years by the time the remastered (5.1) boxset, LP, Pic Disc etc is released in October but it’s better late than never - and TFF did have a good excuse for the delay. 2 discs of unreleased material! Yes, that’ll be 2 discs worth of demos and an unreleased song! I honestly don’t think the record label have confidence in the band. Or rather DDHQ haven't the metal or know how to do it. Why miss a 30th anniversary? They did the same with TWA for the 25th. I’m just at a complete loss with it all. Disillusioned is a better word. I get that Sowing the Seeds is a superior album and it sold bucket loads. However, all I have to do is look at the positive response about Liberty on social media! It’s a continuous merry-go-round (the irony of the Liberty album artwork). Nobody seems to be concentrating on business at HQ. Let me speak directly to management.. “Do you want your client to fail? Do you want to make money? Do you want the band to be a success? Do you want to keep losing DD’s fan base? Do you want DD fans to be happy? Are you bloody listening?? Stop with the politics and market OUR band effectively and efficiently! Absolute BS.

Liberty is my least favourite DD album and as a consequence must be the one I listen to the least, but it is still a DD album and, of course, has some gems on it.
My Antarctica is the best of them, followed by Serious, then it's between Violence of Summer and Liberty. The rest of the album I generally struggle with, but Venice Drowning has grown on me - I think it was actually something that somebody said on here so I revisited the track and listened to it in a new light.
It was interesting to read that SLB struggled a bit with writing lyrics during the Liberty writing and recording. His troubles since the late 90s are possibly well-known, but didn't realise he had some bouts of Writer's Block before that.
