I know I am an outlier, but I absolutely loved U2’s last album, Songs of Experience. And contrary to what someone posted about it disappearing without a trace, “Get Out Of Your Own Way” seemed to get a lot of airplay over here (heard it on the radio and seemingly on satellite radio or whatever is played at the store etc- it always seemed to be on).
I also loved 2009’s No Line On The Horizon, and 1997’s Pop.
To Oakey’s point: Fairly or not, U2 are in a different league than DD; nobody would even compare them (at least not in the US).

I adore ‘No Line on The Horizon’ - in particular ‘Moment of Surrender’. Such a class track. It’s way way on another stratosphere. It’s just divine, epic and euphoric. Although I can’t comment on Songs of Innocence as I haven't yet heard it, how can it possibly be a bad album? I shall have to listen one of these days. Speaking as an Englishman, it’s never ever crossed my mind to compare Duran Duran with U2. If I did, U2 would always win as all of their albums have that unmistakable U2 dna stamped all over them. And it’s down to that man, David Howell Evans. He’s not called The Edge for nothing. Ohhh, doesn't he play guitar or something? Reliable, consistent and stadium sellouts. This band do not have a need to reinvent themselves. After all, why fix something if it isn’t broke? U2 are giants amongst the very best Rock bands on this planet and Bono is a very powerful figure whom’s shadow looms over his peers. I grew up listening to Boy and October in the early 80’s. While DD came too soon, U2 built themselves into this colossal empire and it took them about 7 years and several albums before they peaked and didn't take their foot off the gas. That’s staying power, displaying a unison of sheer, unwavering commitment. Their live sound is a majestic symbol of superiority, while DD have become this non committal fan fare who depend on social media and the forever faithful USA fandom to fill the cracks created by a sub standard back drop. So to compare U2 with a band that can only tickle the top 10 album chart is just frankly incomprehensible and laughable. Let’s get our feet back on the ground and stop pretending that DD are rock gods when it’s evident they are very clearly not.

They may not be rock gods but they make different albums each time..U2's album with the exception of a few albums sounds the same! Same edge riff same style.. lazy.. overpriced tickets live too! Listen to PG for example with headphones. It's a new experience each time I listen to it! I can't say the same about U2! Try it! A good comparison of Duran vs U2..listen to instant Karma! Duran's was way better! Bono and company phoned it in!! A 3 piece band that blows U2 live is the Police! Too bad they don't get along! On stage they are amazing!!!!

Totally agree with you about The Police. I’m a massive fan. Just a drummer, a bass and a guitar..creating that magic. And you’re comparing The Police with U2. Now that is what I’m talking about! As for Paper Gods? I can’t listen - and headphones would make it worse. I just don’t rate the album Andre. Part of it could be down to personal bitterness, that DD could have made a better record if there were no parameters. But they’ve done what they did in the studio so it would be easier to replicate on a tour. Ie Presets, bass and synth. And just to finish before I have my dinner, I’d never ever compare The Police with DD. It’s the same with U2 and all of those other great live bands. Duran covering The Police? Nah.

I agree with you Skinburn on what you said above. You make some valid points. But you have to compare Instant Karma by Lennon. Who did it better? Be honest? U2 or Duran??? Duran already covered Police with Walking on the Moon for NASA special.. it was a tough song to do.. it wasn’t great but I give them an A for effort!

I totally disagree that Duran's Paper Gods album is different with each listen and better with headphones. The songs I like, I like. But the ones I don't like I still don't like. And I definitely can't listen to it with headphones more than once without getting a headache (and I know this for fact as I recently went through a binge of that album, listening to my favorites on repeat, and it gave me a headache). Between the production and the compression that is definitely NOT a headphone album.

Roger says #15 will be a return to basics. Raw drums bass and guitar! Let’s hope so!!!! Can’t wait!!!! Here is one of my favorite Duran Duran remakes!!! I miss this sound! Duran Duran I fell in love with!!! Perfect mix of Simon, John , Andy , Nick and Roger! This is what I’m talking about!!!

Unexpectedly "Songs of Innocence" is one of the best U2 albums. I don't like their "mainstream" period from "Pop" to "No Line on the Horizon", to me it's an elevator music.

I didn't know where to put this, so, this seems a good place.
My children have, on 2 different occasions, revealed that they both like the song, Change the Skyline. And I'm not saying they tolerate it. I'm saying they have each, actively, been listening to it when I'm not around. My son asked me to play it today on the way home from school. That's pretty interesting.
I have had that song playing in my vehicle for the last week or so, and normally neither of the kids have much preference for a particular type of music in the car. Whatever's on is fine (though my son will often venimently object to some music...he's so much like me it's sick lol).
So, perhaps Duran did do a good job of making some tunes the young folks could get down with. Mine do, apparently. Of all the albums they've made, that one wasn't one I thought would get their attention (they both like songs from the earlier albums, but not enough to ask for them).

This thread has me listening to the vinyl PG album now 🙂 Haven’t played the full album for quite a while.
But it also makes me curious with what sound they’ll come up with for the next album. Maybe the anticipation is what we should embrace now, as the actual product will beyond doubt disappoint many here.
