This thread has me listening to the vinyl PG album now 🙂 Haven’t played the full album for quite a while. But it also makes me curious with what sound they’ll come up with for the next album. Maybe the anticipation is what we should embrace now, as the actual product will beyond doubt disappoint many here. I can’t embrace the anticipation. The band are heading in a direction that is alien to my ideology of expectations. Put it this way, I wouldn’t put money on a guitar driven album. There’s zero promo by HQ - no tidbits to water my dry mouth, to convince me otherwise. Drop an EP as a taster and keep people interested. Pacify those who are prepared to put in the effort to keep others interested. I’m losing my mojo.

But once the album comes out I will be interested to hear what they made of it. Fully agree with HQ and management, but let’s not forget that it’s the band who is behond this. They are in control and the ones to blame for the lack of physical product since September 2015. Other artists manage to get their product out even in the absence of any tours in the short term. Looking forward to the new pink vinyl album bu Bright Light Bright Light that will arrive today hopefully. And as for remasters, the yellow vinyl German version of Radioaktivität by Kraftwerk is something I look forward to.

I’m currently waiting by my front door, waiting for the postman to deliver Prince’s Sign O’ The Times CD deluxe boxset. I listened to it on Apple yesterday and it’s simply jaw dropping! Questions are being asked in musical circles if it’s the greatest album ever? I’m not sure about that one, however what I do know is that the set should belong in any 80’s music connoisseur’s collection. I’m not wasting a year or two waiting for something that won’t happen. But I appreciate your commitment and resolve! Lol

It's great to see Sign O' The Times receiving its due, although as a complete album, the follow-up, Lovesexy, was the pinnacle. It reminds me of Liberty - an album which mesmerises from start to finish. As for Paper Gods, I think Duran albums are now such a mix of different sounds and styles that some songs we love and others we're happy never to hear again. I've found that the best way to approach a new Duran album is to download all the B sides and bonus tracks as well as the deluxe version and then make your own album of between 8 to 10 songs. This worked really well with AYNIN, as I was able to turn a pretty good album into a great one. The only problem with this strategy for PG is how to include Dancephobia without it being spoiled by the cringy bit.

lol @ "the cringy bit". My first thought: the words? Smh, that song could have been good, but the word, dancephobia, should, absolutely, not exist.
As I've been revisiting that album I feel like there are several tracks that could have been really good if...something. But I have also made my playlist, which is a decent album. (though I really do have a hard time listening to it for long, with headphones, because of the compression and production choices).
I'm in the Oakey camp, enjoying the anticipation of the new product. Hoping for the best. Trying not to expect the worst as that's not helpful to my psychi and, really, just takes away from my enjoyment of the band.
And I agree, there is quite a bit of other music to enjoy so all my eggs are, also, not in this one basket. Personally, I've been finding myself going backward, exploring things I never considered from the 70s & 80s and looking at more atmospheric sound that was too mature for my taste, when it was originally released.

I didn't know where to put this, so, this seems a good place. My children have, on 2 different occasions, revealed that they both like the song, Change the Skyline. And I'm not saying they tolerate it. I'm saying they have each, actively, been listening to it when I'm not around. My son asked me to play it today on the way home from school. That's pretty interesting. I have had that song playing in my vehicle for the last week or so, and normally neither of the kids have much preference for a particular type of music in the car. Whatever's on is fine (though my son will often venimently object to some music...he's so much like me it's sick lol). So, perhaps Duran did do a good job of making some tunes the young folks could get down with. Mine do, apparently. Of all the albums they've made, that one wasn't one I thought would get their attention (they both like songs from the earlier albums, but not enough to ask for them). Change the Skyline is a song that I’ve loved from day 1. Your story reminds me of the time I played “Playing With Uranium” at the beginning of a training (at my job) in the fall of 2000. People were walking in and getting settled and loved it...imagine their surprise when I told them it was DD!

PG is a good album but not a great one. It lacks cohesion and there are a couple of clunkers. The bonus tracks are great though! However, there’s not enough guitar and where there is it’s lacking. I love John Frusciante but found his contributions underwhelming. To think it took them nearly five years to make this album is unbelievable. They over-tinker.

Agree with most points here (lack of cohesion, some duds, too much tinkering) but I stand by the fact that had Paper Gods been released with the following tracklist, we would hold it in much higher regard:
Paper Gods Pressure Off Face For Today Valentine Stones Kill Me with Silence What are the Chances Change the Skyline Northern Lights Cinderella Ride Only in Dreams Universe Alone
Bonus Tracks : Planet Roaring As Seen From A Distance Butterfly Girl Sunset Garage
