"You see, when Duran Duran play EDM styled music, my concern is that the keyboards are front, right, and centre, and pretty much all I hear. All of a sudden, the album has become a Nick Rhodes record, with Simon Lebon on guest vocals. John often joins along playing synth bass, a complete waste of talent. Roger phones it in, copying and pasting four bars on most songs, and his work appears to be done in five minutes. And then they either get Dom, or <insert guest guitarist here>, to tack on some guitar as an afterthought. Often Simon's vocal melodies suffer on these songs as well."
I completely agree on this. This is not my Duran either and, frankly, though I love Nick's soundscapes, I don't enjoy an album with him front and center at all. It's not enough texture at all for my taste. Roger and John are also far less present in those type tracks/albums, but, I think, that's about the texture, which, it's possible, is being changed during production and they are more present before the production process alters everything.
The bottom line, without proper balance, I do believe, (and I'm not "blaming" him because it's allowed to happen by a vote) Nick produces a lot of their "sound" (qualities that come specifically from drums and bass) away and they blend too much into the keyboards. So, they may have contributed quite a bit, but I think much of the texture of their contributions disappears. That wouldn't happen if they had a guitarist too...but they don't and so it does.
The one I think phones it in is Simon, and that's so disappointing as I really do care about Lyrics (maybe more than others here) and I don't care if they have deep meaning or whatever, but I do care if they lack any imagination, and sound, simply, like something you'd sceam out at a football game to get the crowd energized. blah
This is one of the reasons I'm holding out hope for the producers they've chosen. There's more texture and nuance in their past projects and I'm hoping with this team there will be more of that and we'll here somthing that isn't so...keyboard sounding.
oakey, I use the phrase edm but I use it to describe a particular type of dance music consisting of a droning sort of beat, with a heavy drop, clearly sequenced and very minimal traditional instruments. I don't, generally, use the term dance music, since I, like many here, think dance music is music you can dance to, rather than a particular genre. But, edm is definitely dance music and disco is definitely dance music.
