Good luck with crate training! It did not work for me. The first night we got our Pomeranian she was fine in the crate because I think she was still in shock from flying on an airplane...lol.. The next night she went nuts in it chewing on it growling flipping out really bad!! She did this all night, I even put a light blanket over the kennel and she had some toys in there as well. The next night the same exact thing but worst! This went on all night again. I couldn’t stand it so we resorted to getting a babies playpen. She loved this!!! She had more freedom and she didn’t feel locked up. We put her bed in there and a puppy pad, if she had to do an emergency during the night. This worked for 3 weeks, until she figured out how to jump higher! We put the baby playpen away and decided to let her sleep with us. She is 4 months now and sleeps like a baby all through the night, if she does have to go potty during the night she licks my cheek or paws at it to wake me up and I carry her out and as soon as she’s done I say nite, nite and take her back to bed. A minute or two and she is sound a sleep. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful puppy!

I'm glad you found something that works for you. I went through the "cry it out" phase with my son already, so I know I can stomach it.

Crate-training took a couple of tries with our dog, then *I* got it right. She uses her crate to sleep in during the day and to escape when she's had 'enough'. She usually sleeps in my kids' room when they go to bed.
I can't remember what I did for crate training (cuz I screwed it up a couple times), but if you want your dog to poop in only one area of your yard, I can certainly help you there!
--build a dog run --each time the house-trained dog wants to go out, you lock him/her in the run for about 15 minutes. --you let the dog out of the run and back in the house --after about a week, the dog will only eliminate in the dog run, without being locked in

We crate trained our Ruby she is a weenie dog. At first when she was a puppy I had in my room at night to take her potty. The trainer told us carry her to the door and say outside the whole way till your outside. Now she still sleeps in her crate at night in the living room ( my bed is really tall and Iam afraird she would try to jump off) She loves her crate when she has had enough of the kids she goes inside to sleep under all her blankies. I have 2 draped on the back like a cave and she has a night light too!! Jos

Thanks Murdress. I have been reading like crazy and have actually put together a list of commands including the actual words I want our family to say for consistency, a schedule, and a rule book. I researched breeds and we are going to get a Havanese. They just got their AKC acceptance a few years ago, so not a lot of people have heard of them. They are toy dogs that don't shed, aren't real barkers, are really good with kids, and fast learners. They were breed in Cuba as pets for royalty and have an extensive background as circus dogs, thus they are very easy to train. AWWWWWWWWWW! I know about the Havanese, they are related to my pup Cole who is a Bichon Frise. We were looking at the Haveanese when we were at the dog show last month. My mom wants to get one but she has her hands full with her Caton de Tulear, she's a spit fire. It sounds like you really have done all of your homework and that is so great to hear!! Here are a couple of pics of the adorable Havanese we saw. Awwwww. She was a champion. I can't wait to see pics of your new baby!!! Have fun with the grooming

I plan to keep him/her in a puppy cut. There's no way I'm dealing with all that hair. I have a hard enough time dealing with mine.
