Ah, i'd not seen the back of that - so quite possibly what he's said was simply unclear, as it sounded like it was the LP sleeve itself. Well unclear indeed if you dont know he means the seal on the back of the envelope... you had to break the seal to get the album out (of the envelope). So sad so few copies of this blue envelope have survived! I know promos were sent out in this blue envelope in Australia and Italy and i assume in the UK too although i have not seen UK copies yet.
...but yeah, these effectively never come up for sale - &, tbh, i'm sure i've seen far more copies of the Australian Radio promo then i have of this from any country.
Same with the Notorious The Album promo tbh.

Am I the only one to not like the designs by Malcolm Garrett?
I like the first album’s design plus the singles, Rio and Arcadia are okayish and Notorious is great. The rest IMO is very 80s, dated, too busy, multiple colours and font styles in one design or even one word, the Their Story book shown here is a great example. Italics and regular and two colours and all caps in the name Duran Duran alone… Seven and Arena are stick on photo designs, ie a photo (that in itself is again very busy, with background etc) that has nothing to do with the design that is then framed with symbols etc.
I am not a designer but it’s not really my taste.
IMO there were much better sleeve designers in the 80s. Peter Saville and Mark Farrow for instance.

My only comment is why the combined talents of Peter Saville and Malcolm Garrett produced their worst sleeve...!! Great designers both though. Fascinating interview, thanks. I recently picked up the November 1981 issue of New Sounds, New Styles and the two pages on Duran is totally tied into the Assorted Images work, forgot that was also De Graaf/ Garrett.

And i dont think you need to be a designer to comment on a design i think. Personally i love the Arcadia designs (except the French/Japanese/Australian sleeve for Goodbye Is Forever) even better than the Rio one. I do agree on 7&TRT and Arena, those are a bit... too much i think.

MoOost [< said in Mr Rhodes' pronunciation] exciting post and interview - and what about the period visual tidbits strewn here'n'there along the thread? Yay!
I must say I can't believe how lame the 'Greatest' cover was/is, in comparison to what had come before from Garrett. All that empty white space coupled with the rote small Helvetica for a DD greatest hits.. Of course they should have teleported themselves 15 years ahead and used the 'Paper Gods' sleeve art. But especially that tiny 'duran duran' in small letters up there on the front sleeve... ouch, hurts my eyes.
OTOH I thought it was a nice idea at the time them hooking up with their very first designer John Warwicker for the 'Sunrise' single, although nothing much else seemed to come out of that.

All personal taste as you rightly say, but there is a real sense of consistency with both - - the 7&TRT moving into the tour merch & programme. - & Arena with TWB - & then the development into parts of the AVTAK design & 85 official merch.
& i must say that i actively do like those Goodbye is Forever sleeves - where it's The Promise that's the more problematic one of the proper singles for me as it's really boring... ...although the Playing For Keeps 7" sleeve is truly awful imho.

I'm assuming that Say The Word wasn't Garrett?
